I had an obvious runt my very first hatch, I let it live.
I have an obvious runt this hatch and I am debating on not letting it live.
:confused::confused::confused:
I’m the “other” vote in the poll. I only cull when significant hatch deformity. otherwise i make them as comfortable as possible and let nature do its thing. It’s a quality of life decision that is difficult to make. but with the losses i’ve had post-hatch runts and otherwise healthy chicks, I definitely don’t want to add to it.

so today is day 5...new bator seems to be running great! the eggs are too small to use built in candler but still fun to try! I’ve also been doing a bit of hand turning a couple times a day to ensure that they are turning. I candled a few in the old bator last night. I ditched 1 that I cracked as it appeared clear anyway. so 67 total and I could see development clearly in 1 of the lighter colored ones!!! i should have gotten a picture! going to try and wait to fully candle closer to lockdown.

Wow, they grow as fast as quail! :eek:

WOAH! They do grow fast!
If they are from a good line, I'm told they should get to 5 pounds by 8 weeks old, which is butcher weight. I plan to weigh at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 weeks to track their growth. I was told not to let them go past 12 weeks or they aren't as tender and you have to cook them different.
