➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Okay candlers, I have a question.

I candled a few eggs last night just to compare the 1 egg from my birds to those I purchased. In a couple of the eggs I swear there was movement, like a person who moves their face away from a bright light suddenly in their face. I could make out some veins in some too.

Did I jostle the eggs, or are there live embryos in there? Last night was 3.5 days.
You might be seeing the live embro swimming!

Could be but most likely not yet. Really need about 5 to 8 days before you can actually see an embryonic mass of cells. The reason I say 'could be' is because depending on were they came from the temp in the shipping box could have reached temps adequate to start incubating.

I can see a heart beat around day 4-5.

Thank you guys! I picked the eggs up from a local so no shipping but I don't know the temp of where they were stored.

I'm going to wait until day 10 check again.

Yes, looks like. Had a recent shipped batch end up with a bunch of those. Yank em before they start leaking imo :sick I had to prune that batch a little on the liberal side but they stopped exploding after that so it was worth it.

Sorry about your duds! I hope your hatch rate is still great but let me know if not; I might not be that far away.

Can I pull them and stash them in the fridge in garage until I can eggtopsy them? I won’t have time to do that until this afternoon but don’t want to leave them in the incubator that long.

We picked these eggs up from Alchemist Farm in Sebastopol and as far as I know she gathered them no more than 3 days ahead of time which is why I had higher hopes (compared to shipped) for my first hatch.

Thanks for the offer, I may take you up on that! Was wanting 4-5 females and 1 male from this hatch but don’t know if that will happen now...

Hmm. I'm sure you've been asked this a million times, but you've got separate temp and humidity monitors on there?

I made that mistake my first batch thinking it couldn't be *that* off. My hatch rate exploded after I fixed that.

They may have also just come in with some bacteria present that's going to town now.

Yeah just lmk! I'm in a bit of a hen-deficit at the moment as well but I've got plenty of hatching eggs and little fancy males. I might end up starting another hatch soon, too, and I'd be happy to save you some pullets from that one.
