When do your quail (coturnix) begin laying eggs?
My quail are 9 weeks old and have not laid an egg yet. We provide feed with about 27% protein. I am not supplementing light, but they are in a sunroom that gets plenty of light through the windows all day - mostly indirect sunlight since it's on the north side of our house. The temp is kept around 65-70 F. Thoughts?

6-9 weeks, but as others have said, not unless they're getting 14+ hours of daylight.

Casper! Still blind as ever. Hollers in alarm when I clean cages unless I chatter soothingly at him :3 Doesn't seem to know how to groom himself (or even be aware that he gets so dirty), but that's his only real practical handicap so far.

@Texas Kiki this guy is as close as I have gotten to a black quail (left). You can see how differently shaded he is from his brother (right) and the rest of his siblings.

Thank you! I have way too many at the moment. I am butchering five and selling twelve tomorrow so I will appreciate them again a lot more soon.

7:30 last night, Duckling told me she would eat a quail right then. Little brat probably would have too! I can’t explain her current pickiness, but if I thought she would have, I would have gotten one on her plate in a jiffy!
I’ve never processed a bird alone. Uncertainty is my biggest hang up.

we had one of our 5 week olds for breakfast this morning....it was my little adventurous silver that found his way into shed last week. he found his way in again and crawled under the door into the waiting jaws of one of my dogs! dog brought it inside so hubby skinned it out and fried for breakfast with his livers, hearts, and gizzards from yesterday’s cull.
