āž” Quail Hatch Along🄚

@Shortchick I am so sorry. Does that leave you with only one? Gonna have to snuggle that critter (oh no! ;)).

I pick up my rabbit(s) this weekend. :celebrate Very exciting. Hubby's a huge fan of the meat and they're so much more substantial. And cuddly!
Where did you order rabbits? Are you sourcing form a local breeder? I would like to start a meat rabbit breeding program, but cannot find a source locally. I wish I could order through a store, but those options seem to have all disappeared too.

I am starting with just meat-mutts and I found a killer deal on a HUGE group all bundled on CL because the owner is getting out of them. Bit of a drive but she's meeting me halfway to see them all gone in one go. Mom is half Flemish half rex, and good size (10 lbs), with adult offspring that big too.

I am getting a pedigreed blue Flemish giant buck late this summmer from another breeder close by, but I don't quite have space for him at the moment. :love

Right after I wrote that last post I found that Rural King, which is 20 miles from me so I normally don't go there, carries meat rabbits. I may have to check it out... Who knows, I might get into rabbits after all.
10lbs! That's a nice rabbit. I have wild rabbits all over the yard/neighborhood. I have thought about live trapping some, but I have read horror stories about live rabbits in captivity. The get vicious apparently, so I have chosen to leave the wild ones in the wild.

@BReeder! Wild rabbits are a different species (not sure that’s the right word) from domestics. All domestic rabbits had their origins in Europe... book-larnin’ but still... ;-)

Look up rabbit growers association. I found a number of hits in my area. I haven’t tried to follow up on any of them because I’m not sure when I’ll be ready to get rabbits. Things like that are often out-dated, but it’s worth a try.

I use an LED light bulb in my chicken coop and it works fine, or at least I get lots of eggs. I’ve heard of folks using a string of Christmas lights (white ones, I suppose) with good success.

@CoturnixComplex do you know if there is any resemblance of human and quail sperm? I know in humans male sperm swim faster because they weigh less, but also die off faster. So if someone wanted to increase their chances of having a girl, you would have sex 3 days before ovulation.

So if you took quail, had them mate then incubated eggs (from a certain number of days after mating) you will see more females hatch?:idunno

I have no idea but that's a fascinating question!

I know you can play with the incubation temperature to keep males from hatching, but that's morally questionable for some and is just an overall worse outcome (fewer birds) as opposed to a higher number of females hatching.

I must go google things.
