➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Know that IF it is coccidiosis the medicated feed will do nothing to help.
yes but if it’s not....shouldn’t hurt them. it is 18% protein but has pretty good levels of lysine and methionine etc and hopefully will give me some time to watch their poops and see if I can find corid and/or meds recommended by 007sean @ tsc or if i need to order it on amazon. i’ve been extremely lucky so far that I’ve not had true coccidiosis or anything contagious or bad in my birds so I’m hoping this situation is the same.....just crappy weather and brooding errors.

if any questions or concerns regarding shipping, you can contact zack directly via phone or facebook. i have always had best luck reaching him via facebook messenger. I know @CayugaJana has contacted him directly as well. if you do contact him....definitely let him know that you are member of our group here! I’ve been a pretty steady customer since december so he knows me well!! :lau

:lau thanks I’ll definitely do that if I contact them!! lol

i went ahead and picked up some medicated starter to mix with game feed....rural king doesn’t carry crap!! the remaining 7 are looking good today so i’m hopeful that the grim reaper has left!! of course it’s all a guessing game, but i’m thinking that it was multi-factor. this shipment obviously came from early eggs in hatchery stock, they had access to bad stuff they could eat but not digest properly, temps were abnormally cold over the weekend, and today i saw a runny brown poop! hopefully I’ve corrected most of the possible factors and all remaining will thrive now!!! i moved the 3 week olds out this morning (quail and twin quickens) there was a bit of pecking at the twins more than the babies at first but all seem to be integrating well. now i can clean the hutch brooder and start juggling chicks again! I moved 16 more fluffies from incubator to brooder this morning and i still have 4 more + 1 hatching. (total 37 hatch so far +/-) with only the 1 loss to “suicide”. i also cracked a few “homegrown” today and had 50% fertility so I gave each of the broody silkies 4 eggs to sit on. 3 of the 5 cracked went on my burger tonight! 1 was damaged and pooed on and one was a fairy egg.
Do Not mix medicated starter with anything. The medicated starter has the proper amount of medication in it. If you dilute it by mixing it with something else, you reduce the medication below the level that it is necessary for it to be effective.

"How many?"
However many you want to set in terms of how many quail eggs you are planning on setting. The closer the better to your future hatching plans.

"..should weigh them anyway? To keep track of weight changes??"
Yes you should! It's a good way to properly gauge how much water loss the eggs are receiving, which will help you see where you need to have your humidity at instead of guesstimating. (I don't do this personally because I don't have a scale)

As far as your hens, it's probably just everything overloading them. They are on the older side of hatchery hens anyways so it doesn't take much to get them to stop laying.

Thank you!! This is very helpful!!

I’ll weigh them and set some then. Can I just turn it on and put them in? I know with real eggs I can’t but since these aren’t real can I?? I’m inpatient lol or I could always plug it in and leave it running for an hour or so or a couple hours while I watch TV/before bed and then set it before bed? Want to do it tonight lol though I don’t have to. But now you guys have me curious lol although so don’t want to set all my eggs and don’t want to waste them..... so idk....

And okay, thanks. That’s a good point. I’ll weigh them.

Hm, that’s true!! I was actually surprised they were still laying daily lol although the weird thing is the fox has been around a while and they were still laying fine until I added the chicks. :barnie Although I did read something that said stress like adding new birds can cause them to stop laying, even younger, healthier birds, and to try not to do it when they’re in prime laying time so you don’t miss out on the eggs, which was a good point, but I had already ordered the chicks before I read that and plus I wanted spring chicks anyway. Fall chicks are a huge pain. So I guess I’ll just have to deal with it and hope they get used to it and to each other and start laying again LOL

The goal is to run the bator to test it out.
See what happens when you open it to candle a fake egg.

Thanks! That makes sense!!

In all honesty, you don't have to weigh them but I would just because quail eggs are harder to candle it seems. Just do what you prefer!

I would plug it in, let it run through the night and get your hygrometers calibrated again so that way it'll be running as a real incubation would.

I think I'm caught up after skimming, did you off all of your young ones?
Yes. They are all in the freezer.
I'm getting jumbo eggs next week or the week after.

I have 6 eggs in the bator just for one last fun hatch if my own eggs.

They should pop in a day or two.

Are you planning a quail cage for the new house? :D

Plug it in, turn it on, let it run for a few days.
Check the temp and humidity at least 5 times a day.
The eggs are just for decoration.

Thanks!! That’s a good point. I’ll do that then!! Don’t really have time to weigh all the eggs and set them right now anyway lol

5 times a day!? OMG!

And okay thanks. So no eggs the first few days? Or eggs right away?
Either way. The eggs are fake so it doesn't even matter.

I checked mine hourly for days...the first time.

I still check many times a day just to be sure nothing crazy happens.
