➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

This is why it's a must.
You must learn your bator...inside and out...before you buy eggs.

Hmmm that’s true!! No fun but true!! Lol maybe I will learn it and just miss the sale. They are not that expensive anyway. Don’t wanna waste money by not having it figured out and have something go wrong. I actually need to figure out the turner haha idk how to tell if it’s working. I haven’t really seen it turn or anything but idk.

I am pretty sure they will have another sale in the future.

Hm that’s true!! I’ve just wanted quail for a while and even my mom keeps asking when we’re gonna get them LOL so I kinda wanted to get them soon. Especially since I ordered the incubator at the beginning of March with the intention of using it to participate in the Easter Hatch A Long and hatch quail..... yeah.... that didn’t happen LOL so I’m just kinda anxious to get them :lau

i went ahead and picked up some medicated starter to mix with game feed....rural king doesn’t carry crap!! the remaining 7 are looking good today so i’m hopeful that the grim reaper has left!! of course it’s all a guessing game, but i’m thinking that it was multi-factor. this shipment obviously came from early eggs in hatchery stock, they had access to bad stuff they could eat but not digest properly, temps were abnormally cold over the weekend, and today i saw a runny brown poop! hopefully I’ve corrected most of the possible factors and all remaining will thrive now!!! i moved the 3 week olds out this morning (quail and twin quickens) there was a bit of pecking at the twins more than the babies at first but all seem to be integrating well. now i can clean the hutch brooder and start juggling chicks again! I moved 16 more fluffies from incubator to brooder this morning and i still have 4 more + 1 hatching. (total 37 hatch so far +/-) with only the 1 loss to “suicide”. i also cracked a few “homegrown” today and had 50% fertility so I gave each of the broody silkies 4 eggs to sit on. 3 of the 5 cracked went on my burger tonight! 1 was damaged and pooed on and one was a fairy egg.
I wouldn't mix the medicated with your regular feed, it will dilute the effective concentration of medicated feed.

The more I think about it, I think they may have had Aspergillosis. Hatcheries are known for having higher instances of the disease. Incubating overly dirty eggs or eggs that have been stored a long time, can explode and distribute spores throughout the incubator. Affected chicks will show signs at 3 to 7 days after infection. Can also affect chicks 7 to 40 days old.
There is no treatment only prevention of the disease by strict sanitation practices.

I hope you have brought it under control by cleaning out the brooder and eliminating any contaminates.

yes but if it’s not....shouldn’t hurt them. it is 18% protein but has pretty good levels of lysine and methionine etc and hopefully will give me some time to watch their poops and see if I can find corid and/or meds recommended by 007sean @ tsc or if i need to order it on amazon. i’ve been extremely lucky so far that I’ve not had true coccidiosis or anything contagious or bad in my birds so I’m hoping this situation is the same.....just crappy weather and brooding errors.
Oxytetracycline and erythromycin are script from a vet. I'm not sure but I think you can get Duramycin at TSC? I have never had coccidiosis with any of my pheasants but then again, I practice strict sanitation and biosecurity of my birds and their enclosures.

I also considered Infectious Coryza but pheasants and quail are not as prone to the disease like chickens are...that's why I was asking if they had nasal discharges and sneezing. Primary breeding grounds for coryza is wet or tropical humid environments. If they have coryza, I would recommend treatment with a sulfonamide medication.

Do Not mix medicated starter with anything. The medicated starter has the proper amount of medication in it. If you dilute it by mixing it with something else, you reduce the medication below the level that it is necessary for it to be effective.

I missed 20+ pages, but I am back. I was out of town all of last week for work and then a weekend vacation with the family.
Still no eggs from the quail... darn birds! I am tempted to hatch more though. My 12 turkey eggs all failed to hatch or failed to thrive shortly after hatch and we only have one surviving chick from the 8 chicken eggs. 3 others lived and died one after another over the first few days. The solo chick is in the incubator. I feel bad for him/her. I had much better luck with quail eggs, so thinking about ordering some again. Sticking to JBs though if I do. No desire here to go for different colors. I want big, meaty birds.

:celebrate They're amazing. What a variety you have going!

@BReeder! You should! Jumbos are so great. I would have them if I had space. I am getting 3 from Sara to match with my roux dilute male that's throwing sex-linked chicks to produce for customers but even for that I have to set up a big dog crate separately.

I'm sorry to hear about your turkeys :( Silly things.
