➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

I missed 20+ pages, but I am back. I was out of town all of last week for work and then a weekend vacation with the family.
Still no eggs from the quail... darn birds! I am tempted to hatch more though. My 12 turkey eggs all failed to hatch or failed to thrive shortly after hatch and we only have one surviving chick from the 8 chicken eggs. 3 others lived and died one after another over the first few days. The solo chick is in the incubator. I feel bad for him/her. I had much better luck with quail eggs, so thinking about ordering some again. Sticking to JBs though if I do. No desire here to go for different colors. I want big, meaty birds.
I was reading (always) a book on incubation. One of the things the author emphasized was sanitizing the bator thoroughly between batches. He said you’d get good hatches and then gradually worse results in the incubator and the brooder. Probably not your problem, but something to consider. It’s why I got a plastic (not styrofoam) one. Easier to clear out all the possible nasties.

Boy this incubating thing is nerve wracking. I pulled eight eggs last night that I’m pretty sure are duds and put them on the edges. Then I fit the remaining in the turning tray in the center.

Several had really great, active looking embryos and several looked pretty good but maybe not quite as far along. Some were just too dark to tell much.

So this morning when I checked temp it was several degrees lower than expected. It had been measuring between 99-100 F and was more like 96-97 this morning. Could this just be a false reading because I had to move the thermometer with the racks in there now? If it is real can they still survive a dip in temp like that? I’m at work until 5:30 now so nothing I can really change until then.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Put four calibrated thermometers in the bator so you can see at a glance where the cooler spots are.
This is why some people rotate the eggs around inside the bator during the whole incubation time.

Yes they will survive a dip in temp, not only survive they will hatch...might be a few hours to a day difference in hatch time but they will develop and hatch at that temp.
