➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Are the air cells drawing down yet?
Yes
I opened up a few of my earlier quitters but after a few goopy ones decided I shouldn’t do anymore if I want to be able to eat quail eggs at all. The association was just too much. When I hatched duck eggs years ago I actually quit eating eggs almost entirely for a while. :sick
Please tell me how you got accustomed to the taste.
I used to have a problem eating eggs at all. Now I am okay 98% of the time. Duck eggs though, are too much for me. I swear they destroy (okay, mar) my baked goods. Duckling used to eat them, but after the eggless winter, she won’t touch them anymore. I can put one duck egg in with every three chicken eggs if I am making a big omelette or whatever.

I never thought my well behaved dogs would hurt my babies either...the third time I realized I was so wrong.
Yeah. If given the chance I think he would at least pick them up and mouth them. He is kenneled when were not home so no unsupervised shenanigans. I’m already wondering what to do when they outgrow the tiny brooder. How soon can they go outside?

we had a rough day today....some really bad storms came through today while we were at work. about half my littles decided to pile up in a muddy corner under a bush vs going into any of the variety of shelters i’ve provided!! when we got home, 4 of them were gone and we managed to get to 8 in time to set up an “ICU”. they each got a warm bath, hairdryer and nutridrench before going back to brooder under both a red and white heat lamp. As of dark they all seemed to be doing well....eating, drinking, and moving around.

candled incubator eggs tonight....tossed 14 clear, held 9 suspicious, 58 good.

:hugs Glad you could save the ones you did—hope the survivors bounce back quick!

I never actually ate any duck eggs. I had two pet ducks in high school and the first year she would just lay eggs around the yard so I hatched some. After that she would nest and hatch her own. Everyone always says how good duck eggs are for baking :idunno

If they're Coturnix, you can put them out as soon as they're reasonably feathered out and your nighttime temps are moderate. In my climate, that's around 3-3.5 weeks—I've heard 4 weeks is a good baseline.

 I would be so nervous! My Labrador looks sweetly at the babies, but I know he'd eat them up in a second.
I have been lucky with several dogs and small animals. This one... :lau He’s not high prey (he was retired at 24 mos because he wouldn’t go for the rabbits. I even saw one hopping almost in his face yesterday!), but he’s food oriented, and playful.

Yep. Jumbos from KC Quail. I was thinking I could put the heat plate in the coop when they transition but maybe they wouldn’t even need it by then. They’re already getting tiny pin feathers on their wings at less than a week old. Crazy how fast they grow!

thanks! i just went out and gathered up the other 18 and put them back in the hutch for the night!! The 8 almost appear as nothing ever happened! so it looks like dogs got 2 from the escape and the storms took 4. 26/32 remaining at 2.5 weeks. :fl:fl everyone thrives from here!! (and these storms don’t get any worse!!)

so it takes 4 days from Ohio to Texas. I was thinking 2 days. Hmm. Must be Christmas shipping time. Setting Friday, if the stars align.
makes sense....takes 2 days to me and another 2 to you if all the stars align and post office doesn’t drop the ball!!
