➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Something pulled two bodies out of the hole. Both were whole this morning, but one has since been munched on. / :sick
I saw the mother. I apologized, but she was ignoring me.

Cool day today, and only nine eggs. I started on a six by six pen. It took forever to get as far as I did, and I’m ready to break something. I can still make it twelve feet long, or even twelve by twelve. Or just burn everything down. :D
Still getting 4 a day regular from the 6 hens. No complaints.

Burn, baby, burn! Some of my fondest childhood memories. :D

Will this be a walk in aviary? Or just exercising your construction skills to keep them fresh? Should look good on a resume.

my button was hatched with quail, brooded with quail, chickens, and then in brooder with pheasants/partridge chicks. I released him into aviary at same time with pheasants and partridge. It’s so funny to watch him in the aviary as he still prefers “hanging out” with pheasants and partridge!! He always seems to be cuddled up in the napping pile!! It truly surprises me that he has done so well through all the rain etc. he has never once tried to escape or cause any trouble whatsoever!

It will be a walk in. Six by six is so small, but I keep reminding myself that I’m putting quail in it. Currently 21, but several will have to go. No idea on sexes of the six chicks yet, but I’m sure they aren’t all pullets. I think under twenty is a good number to keep at.
I have a grey plastic bench. I think it’s the best seat for the pen. We are going to like sitting in there. I have some garden decorations (no gnomes though), and I’m hoping to have a rock garden outside. It will be more for Duckling. She can paint them to her heart’s content. I have a landscape supply behind me. The guy is a jerk, and overpriced, but I don’t think he will complain about us picking a few rocks out if I decide to not get a ton. I especially hesitate on that much since he will likely refuse to put the rocks where I ask (most people want to shove them up his ...!).

Edited because I made less sense than usual. Ask me about losing my hand sometime.

Quail hatching this weekend for Rose! Can we call you Rose? Sounds better than Thorny. Will you be candling prior to lock down to pull any quitters?

Mine going to lock down on Friday for another Monday hatch. :hmm I've got to plan this better next year. :old

Which means Kiki is right behind us. <not gonna candle until Thursday. Got a date Friday. Maybe Saturday. Saturday is looking good.>

Yes you can call me Rose:D I'm going to do a final candle and then lock them down, I'll let you guys know what I see in there!

How do you guys store your feed? Do vittle vaults work against mites? Trying to hoard things before shit gets real
Vittle Vaults are air tight, so they should be. They keep the little beetles out of my chinchilla food, and I bought one for my quail feed (even though I don't have any yet).

Am I supposed to see anything? All I could see is the air cell in almost all of them, but in a few I was able to see active veins in there. 46 eggs locked down, I didn't end up pulling any.
Big air pocket. If you wait like I do, internal pips are possible. The rest of the egg should be dark. Even the skinny end.

If you see clearness, it would indicate a late quitter. The whole egg below the air cell should be filled with little balls of not so fluffy fluff.

46 to lock down! My, my, you set the bar high for the rest of us. :fl
