In my first flock, I had one rooster that never had a son. Forty something daughters though.

That is all fine and dandy but unlike humans it is the hen that determines the sex. The rooster can only contribute a Z gene because it is ZZ. It is the hen that contributes the W or Z gene determining the sex. Hens are ZW.

I had no idea that is how chicken sex chromosomes work. I was a biology major and work in the health field so I have a decent grasp on genetics. Apparently just not bird genetics.

I think I am going to setup the incubator this weekend after the 4th and retest the thermostat and humidstat for accuracy. I think something is off... my last hatch attempt of turkey and chicken eggs resulted in only one chick that made survived. If I can get things working fine, I am going to incubate a batch of our quail eggs.

Get a few more thermometers too.
And calibrate at least one.

I have some mercury types that we use in aquariums. I know they are accurate. Going to put 2 of them in hopefully and compare them to the digital thermostat.
