➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Came home today to find one of the juvenile females plucked bald. With 12:5 males to females it wasn’t a surprise. Was hoping they’d hold off a bit longer though. They’re only six and a half weeks old.

I moved her in with the adults and they seem to be doing ok so far. Should I just move the other four girls too or will that just make the boys fight with each other more? Or is it really just a toss up?

it’s somewhat of a toss-up IMO....we butchered another 10 males today hoping that will help with some of the “plucking” and random deaths that have occurred over the past couple weeks. I’ve put scalped and plucky babies back in the grow-out cage to try to let them heal before releasing them again. hubby even did and “experiment” today and tossed several on the ground after pulling heads off because we haven’t witnessed any “aggression” in the mixed flock. the chickens (silkies and silkie cross) seemed to be most aggressive....Hodor is just big and clumsy.the chukars ran “scared” and the pheasants will pick if something already dead but had no real interest in the fresh ones. so newest theory is that birds either died of “natural” causes and then picked at or killed by male quail and then picked clean. while butchering, one of the birds showed sign of trauma (puncture/hematoma in sternum) hubby said would have probably died from trauma in 24-48 hours.

Nice!
I started the incubator yesterday with a mercury thermometer I trust to check the thermostat. If it's working fine, I am going to start collecting eggs to hatch. We get 8-10 eggs a day, you think I can collect them for two weeks and then at them all. I can put 120 in the incubator egg trays.or should I just connect for 1 week and set what I get?
you will probably be fine collecting over 2 weeks as long as you have an area to store that doesn’t get over 70*. I’ve been splitting up my larger orders and some of my shipped eggs have been “settling” for over a week. I wish you lived a bit closer or were traveling through here as I’ve been collecting 2 dozen +/- per day that have resulted in some pretty babies!!
