Would anyone here attempt to keep two males in with nine females in 30 square feet or just don’t even risk it?

I’ve been thinking I would just do one but now that butchering day is getting close I’m reconsidering. What if the one male I keep doesn’t work out (is a jerk or won’t perform)?

You can try it, but success rate is reportedly low; either they end up fighting anyway... or your hens are so upset with the brawling that they quit laying. You'd have a much better chance of success with that many hens if you split your flock into two flocks (if you have or can obtain a second cage). You don't specify the breed of your flock, but judging from your account avatar, I'm guessing Japanese coturnix quail in one color variation or another (or several). My comments are based on this assumption.

30 sg feet is 6x5 or 2x15. I've got 6 in a 2x6 = 12 sq feet. This is one male with 5 hens. I think you will be fine. This one male is balding all 5 hens. He is a little rough, it would appear.

Do you have items to break up line of site? When I had 3 males (grow outs) with 8 females in the same coop, 2 of the 3 males were fighting. #1 stayed in the open section and the #2 male in the other side of the coop from #1 male. #3 was buddies with #1 and didn't have any issues (late bloomer?).

Bottom line, it is up to the birds. Try it. If it doesn't work, off with his head.

I have 2 males in with 10 hens, but it's a 64 sq ft aviary. Plenty of room to run and stuff to hide in.

Oh, when #1 went to the closed section, #2 male came over with me and ate while I was refilling the food. 2 feeders may be warranted so each can have territory and food and water. Depends on the birds. Watch them and see how they behave. These birds were 8 weeks old when I noticed the behavior.

Kiki - the white ones from QB#3 appear to be female. Unfortunately, they are still small at 8 weeks compared to their parents. I haven't gotten a good picture of the jumbos - Big Mama standing next to the runt. HUGE size difference from same hatch.

I'm not sure anymore if my one jumbo is a boy or a girl.

I'm fixing to split up my newest babies.
8 each group.
I am guessing that all of the ones that have white coming in are going to be girls.
