I used to have goldfish. They were too much work, not enough fun. Their tanks now hold chicks.
I keep them downstairs so that the dog doesn't eat them. I kept my rabbit in the living room pre-dogs. I've always been a barn rat, so I'm used to sleeping around critters. But now you can see why I want quail in the basement for as short of a time as possible. At least I can put a wall between me and the smellier critters.
Brooding outside is my favourite way to do things.
Drat, she's onto me.
Some sort of mix. She's insane about anything with feathers. If she gets her hands on even one stray feather, she'll carry it around and chew on it. She spends her days howling at my birds. Dumb dog.Ohhh okay. I was thinking you were like a neat freak or had allergies or something.
What kind of dog do you have?
And true!
I think my next batch will be entirely outside haha
Yup! I am! Better hide.![]()
I’ve only hatched 3 and it was a bit of a learning curve because should they escape....it’s like trying to catch a flying mouse!!!!! Hahaha but they are surprisingly hearty and resilient chicks despite the small size!Is anyone else incubating Button quail eggs? I got roughly a dozen and a half today. They are way tinier than I expected, and oh my, the colour! They're like olives. How does one remove the chicks from the incubator without squishing them? Even the coturnix are incredibly fragile, and these eggs are half their size, easy.
Yeah, that will work, or should I say it should work. 1 male can easily handle 10 hens.@007Sean.....starting to wish I had listened more closely to you!! I’m still losing about 1 quail per day despite my efforts to find the aggressor! It’s happening overnight to first light. Hubby wants to try sending chukars to chicken area until we can look at dividing the aviary. I was ready to start processing!!! the chukar are almost 3 months now and looking like at least 2 males....same with the pheasants at least 2 males. The remaining MM are 1 girl and 1 of the oddballs that is half size still. would 1 male to 3-4 hens would be ok if they get separate pens?
I'll bet! Flying mice. An accurate description of most small birds.I’ve only hatched 3 and it was a bit of a learning curve because should they escape....it’s like trying to catch a flying mouse!!!!! Hahaha but they are surprisingly hearty and resilient chicks despite the small size!
I wish I could help but my only celadon eggs came from myshire (and only occasionally available in auctions) and that was the hatch that incubator malfunctioned and I lost all of themUggggh the universe is conspiring against meeee. Hatch rate of the 120 jmf eggs looks dismal and apparently they got hit by that storm you guys were buying or not buying tp for. I might have. To buy replacement eggs from someone else :/
Any of you guys buy celadon from breeders besides jmf?
They are tiny about the size of a nickel at hatch...when they do hatch, you will understand where the saying 'cute as a button' came from!I am incubating my first set of buttons due next wend or thurs(?) Mr Seans the only other person ive seen with them who i would trust for info on them. Youve got about 18 eggs now or 18 quailies?! Im dying to see thimble sized hatchlings! These eggs are 1/3 the size of cots, ive weighed them![]()
Oh man, I can't wait. They are tiny about the size of a nickel at hatch...when they do hatch, you will understand where the saying 'cute as a button' came from!
I put paper towels down on top of shavings in the brooder. Sprinkle feed all over the paper towels, so anywhere they peck they will get food, I also pit a shallow dish of feed in the brooder too. I have special waterers made specifically for button quail. I'll post pics later when I'm near my computer.
Oh, and make sure they can't get wedged between or under anything because they will if given the opportunity.
