I had a bit of a scare when I got home! The side of the coop that isn't quite finished had come open and I didn't see a single chick! Then I heard a bit of thumping from the inside of a hiding box, and five were in there. I started looking around the garden for the other three, and they were under the coop in the area that I haven't quite finished skirting with hardware cloth. All eight chicks safe and sound, back inside! The ones that were under the coop were so hungry and thirsty. The poor things.

The coop should be finished this weekend. The two part run will be next, but that is a bit less urgent.

I think the wind blew the partition I had closing it off open. It gets windy here in the afternoon. I should have waited until the coop was completed before putting them out, but they're just so crowded in the little brooder!]

Edit: I'm so glad I put the hiding boxes in the coop. That's probably what kept most of them inside.

dh is home and the toddlers. Im omw hm but nobody else was gonna go buy any feed

They are extremely entertaining. Just wait till they mature. If your home alone, late at night and the male starts calling...get ready to have the bejesus scared out of ya...sounds like a monster from a 'B' movie is loose in the house.First time, mine did it, I got up with my pistol and went looking for this creature!
Here's a vid of one calling but unless you turn the volume all the way up, you won't fully appreciate how loud they really are... mine started calling when they heard this vid.

Here's what the females sound like.

my lone button has been pretty quiet lately....but the chukars noises right now are hilariously cute!! we kinda feel bad now for sending them to “bird jail”. but they were plucking my pheasants!

Makes sense. At least some of These have been laying for about 3 weeks. Think I’ll give it a try but not expect too high of a hatch rate.

A friend wants a little group just to keep around for pets. My plan is to let her “trial” the babies to fawn over and then just take back any extras.

i have had a good fertility rate and hatch rate from all my own eggs and some were younger layers. I have had a couple runts, a crossbeak, and 1 albino that I blame a bit on younger layers and full integration of mixed colors (my crossbeak has survived to 7ish weeks so far!!

how long after a stressful event can you notice a disruption in laying? egg numbers dropped a bit yesterday and today there were only 3!! it’s not like I’m hurting for eggs but with all the craziness it makes me even more concerned for my girls!!

I was just wondering if quail molt.
My egg count has gone down in the last week.

My chickens have slowed way down too and today is the first day I am seeing feathers on the ground.
