Any pictures of the chukars? I haven't seen anyone with them locally so know little about them.did some bird maintenance today.....we hung a head of cabbage to see if that would give partridge and pheasant some entertainment to keep them from feather-picking as much. planning to get them some toys as well?? went ahead and butchered 3 in the “infirmary”. (1 was from june batch that never walked right, 1 was hen that got scalped and both eyes pecked and I wasn’t seeing enough improvement to reintroduce, last was male that had eye injury and looked to be better but worsened when I released him). aviary quail # looks to be around 60, 6 chukars, 9 pheasant. about 2 doz in outdoor brooder/grow-out cage, 2/9 hatched so far, 19 still cooking!
only collecting 6 eggs per day and in storage for possible set??? told hubby we need to consider putting at least a dozen more in the freezer soon to get my numbers where I want them!!
the “bird pile” pics are from june 20.......and and the single is recent. there is one listing on here for doz eggs for $30 shipping included that i’ve been watching. They are fairly easy to raise (comparably) and the 1 we butchered at 3 months dressed out just under 1lb......(when i packaged it hubby got confused and thought we had a really big quail! hahaha) would be more ideal if I had separated them before adult feathering as they are easily bored and prone to “bullying” and feather-picking the other birds. they are a bit more skittish than others as well.....pheasants and quail will eat out of our hands, but chukars won’t. oh also very difficult to tell genders apart!!Any pictures of the chukars? I haven't seen anyone with them locally so know little about them.
I have a lot of culling to do too. I'm just waiting for better weather.
