No...I'd leave them until tomorrow.
The more you mess with him the greater chance something bad happens.

If he's able to get around with the man just leave him be.

What are people’s thoughts on holding back some extra eggs that don’t fit in the incubator and swapping them in for any clears found on day 3? Too early to determine clears? Would the prolonged hatch time be annoying?

Just toying around with some ideas. Not sure what the fertility will be given much of the flock, including the rooster, are young.

This would end up turning into a staggered hatch.

Can you not cram all the eggs in there then just pull the clears?


I think I can tell the clears by day 3 but I would give it until day 5 just to be sure

They’re homegrown eggs so I have an abundance of them. I could cram some extras in but that would mean hand turning. Just don’t think I want to mess with that again. Might say the heck with it and do a whole other hatch if I don’t get enough from this round.

Day 3 may be early for clears in my limited experience. However, I did add eggs on day 3 to my current set of eggs in the incubator. So far so good... it didn't seem to effect the existing eggs nor the new ones. I have decided I am going to go into lockdown on day 16 and not go all the up to 60% humidity but aim for 40-50% to ensure a moist environment but try to avoid drowning the younger embryos.

I hand turned for 4 days. Then pulled clears and reorganized.

If you don't want to mess with it, I wouldn't mess with a staggered hatch either. But either way works.

This plan is the one I'd do. Staggering hatches is a bit of a 'magician trick', causes unnecessary worry. If their not bought eggs I wouldn't try it.

3 days difference won't make any difference to the embryos as far as the humidity is concerned...that late in the incubation period, the chicks have mostly developed, so the humidity being raised at that time isn't going to affect them like it would if it were early into incubation.

I would be concerned with water condensing in the air sac. Then when a chick pips internally it will inhale water.

That's not likely with only 3 days. If the humidity was that high the entire time, then yes, it would be a concern.
