Quail getting into position to break out of the egg
I'm just the opposite, I lose more birds in February than I do in July or August. Eventhough, I worry more about the high temps than low temps.

Really? From the cold, or what? Drastic temp change? Too much rain? How cold does it get there in winter? :pop

Hello all, I am happy to here and will be learning how to work this site in the next few weeks. Then we will do something just for all of you. Maybe a giveaway, a Q&A OR MAYBE EVEN AN AUCTION.
:wee:celebrate

It snowed here last year!:eek::eek::eek:
It even stuck to the ground for more than 5 minutes.

Gotcha. If they quit at more than around a week along, they no longer show a distinct blood ring, but rather a fuzzy, sunken look.

Oh, OK, I didn't know that. Thank you! I'll be looking for fuzziness tonight.

I'm going to say since you've already had one egg explode you should go ahead and try and candle the other chicken eggs to see if you can tell if they are bad or not.
Yes maam, I'll do that tonight.

Crazy! We've had the mildest summer on record. I don't know what that means for us... 110 in December or snow? :confused:Either one would be unheard of.

If the inside of the egg moves freely when your candling then it's probably no good.
If you look into the airsell and you cannot see clear veins then it is probably no good.

Love your new avatar! What is it? I think we need captions to identify your amazing birds :love :gig
It's a Texas Chestnut bellied Blue Scale quail. Its sitting in a huisache, pronounced, weesatch tree or shrub. I have a few huisaches in my pens, they were introduced to South Texas, back in the dustbowl days, because it survives on very little water and cattle, deer, sheep, goats can eat the tiny leaves, when there is no grasses or forbs to eat and have a great amount of protein for the size of the leaves.
ETA - also known by locals as a 'Yellow berry' tree, because of the yellow flowers.

oh wow! The horror!!!

I have 5ft poles with my snowshoes, I could not reach the ground though the snow.

I had snow from Dec first through the end of April, so just a tad over 5 minutes.
