➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

I figured that once grown, a quail butt wouldn't poop in the water tray. Bigger so therefore harder to position. WRONG!

The name of the game is to put said quail butt in whatever position needed to make the giant with the food wonder what is going on. The best one so far, was have poop forcefully smooshed through the 1/4" hardware cloth ABOVE the protective cardboard 2" up the wall. Talent. I have talented quail. Devious, conniving, and bored quail.

Pictures this evening of water system. This was a first pass, so keep in mind this is a work in progress.

I'm trying a new no mess feeder out of the 1 quart sour creme/cottage cheese tubs. They haven't knocked it over yet. I put bricks on the old ones to keep them upright. The quail are feeding the chickens with their messiness using the chicken feeders. Glad I put the quail coops in the chicken run.

And another thing, the quail still like flying out a couple times a week as I'm opening the doors. This business with running after quail is getting old.

The cardboard trays for poop boxes is wonderful. Take them out and dump them. If nasty (and I have spares) replace with new tray. I missed my chance to get more trays this week. Time to go shopping again.
I can't walk by and see the slightest bit of dirt flung in a waterer without changing it.

I have the 3 rabbit Cage's birds to where they can't get dirt in the waterers but the 2 cages if babies drive me nuts with dirty water.

I've tried to block the waterer with a piece of wood so they can't fling dirt into it but it doesn't work too good.

Once the cups are attached to the cage, they are harder to clean. Using a water hose and blasting the dirt out makes sense, but wets the bedding. I dig out the big pieces. Still a work in progress. Not being able to clean it is something you will have to deal with. One reason I put them so high. The high kicking quail still get bedding in them. And food.

I don't care for wire floors, but see the attraction. I pondering a wire floor for the living room since Crazy Lady's dogs are dirt magnets outside and anything but a dirt magnet inside. They do this on purpose. They are out to get me.

Ease of daily cleaning is a must for me.
I know. Fair warning given to you here. I just haven't found a good solution yet with stacked coops. Bottom is easy to flush to ground. However, the upper coops would give the lower ones a shower.

Since yours are single level, squirt water in over the wire floor and let it run clean.

Also, the cups I have are easy for the quail to crawl under and lift. They are the weighted kind and lift to fill. I stuck bricks under them to keep the quail from draining the water and taking showers. Remember, this is a work in progress.

I use a one gallon bucket with four horizontal chicken nipples. I hang it from the ceiling of the coop and it works well. Lasts several days with about a dozen quail and as long as the lid stays on the water is clean. It does take up room in the coop though and if the ceiling isn’t high enough it would have to be set on bricks or something.

I have fake wire floors.
My dirt boxes cover them so no way am I squirting water any where.

I probably just stay with my regular waterers.
