➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

i still can’t tell difference between male and female....I’m kinda scared now that I only have 1 female!! DH has agreed to let me incubate more next spring because if only 1 female, i will have to remove 3 males :th
Yep, can't feather sex them puppies!
Some peeps can tell by their spurs but both male and females can have spurs...not a 'for sure' thing. Most of the time males are larger but that too, isn't a be all end all for id'ing sex.

i’ve been looking for spurs, but none of mine have them! and can’t wrangle them close enough together to effectively compare size :th

They don't have what you would normally attribute to a spur. They are more like 'bumps'. Let me find a pick and I'll post it.

I missed like 2000 posts I had a weird couple of last weeks so I haven’t been able to keep up so I just skipped them I read over some but not many have I missed anything important?
@Texas Kiki had 2 hatch, she's got a meanie trying to kill its sibling.:hit

the numbers are for adults....there can be more per cage as they are growing out. and assuming a 50% hatch on 90 eggs you are only 9 over. then assume 50% males that will have to go by 8 weeks. if you are considering another level of cages 2x9, i would recommend one as brooder/grow-out....look at it as a learning experience and basically you just took the fast route to quail self-sufficiency!!
I otoh know better!! my homegrowns have always been 75+% fertile with 80+% hatch so setting 80 eggs was ridiculously stupid!! But we will have plenty in the freezer this winter!!
:highfive:I like your math! I know it'll go smoother once the culling & processing begin.

speaking of winter and too many quail.....we are planning to process (probably 20 or so today) should I take video??
Absofreakinlutely!:yesss:

:love:hugsHopefully she keeps it, it'd barely be big enough to season a bowl of Ramen-Noodles.....

What will a pollet that is about to lay do before she does lay?
I swear that when I read this post it sounded like the beginning of a bad joke!!!:gig:lau
Now read it in the same voice as you would "What would you call it if a Jew, a Catholic and a Budist walked into a bar?":gig:lau

@Cedar Creek Farm Lady.....out of curiosity.....is the “building” that you have built your quail cages in dedicated to quail only or is it multi-purpose and just happens to be where you put cages? i ask because it looks like similar design to what we would consider for aviary frame should we ever build another.

Originally it was one side for me & poultry & the other side for DH. I have confiscated it 100%, he has a new shed & shop. So this side is the same dimension as the side the chickens have, except the fully enclosed "yard" off of the chicken side. I was thinking about shoring the quail side up so some could be on the ground loose... anyways, it'll be chicken & guineas on one side and quail on the other.
