➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Okay thank you! I Googled it right before @Kiki answered and it said to drain and rinse them and they taste better but it didn’t say that on the can and Kiki said to keep it so I decided to use the juice to simmer my stuff in haha did train a teeny tiny bit out before I read Kiki’s reply though haha

I should probably start using real beans but we only have canned ones and I just grabbed the first ones I saw haha black beans.

Idk if I should add it directly to the rice or not though? It’s a lot of juice haha

I was going to make an omelette but I figured I should probably mix it up a little instead of eating the same few things all the time. :lau

Am adding sausage too though.

Made brown rice. Didn’t have white. :hit
Brown rice is so much better IMO, but takes longer to cook. If you have an instant pot, it’s no problem. If you add the juice from the black beans it will color the rest of the food black. It still tastes good as long as the color doesn’t turn you off. It’s mildly healthier, but I would still drain black beans if adding them to rice or other things where the colors would matter, just because it makes a more attractive dish. For most people, if it looks good, that enhances the flavor. Other beans don’t color the food much. It’s just black beans.

For many soups, the bean juice is a valuable component, adding flavor and nutrients. You just have to balance flavor/nutrients with beauty. Both matter, so use your own common sense and then go with your and your family’s preference.

Thank you!! This is very helpful!!

The brown rice was definitely good!! I just thought white rice would be better with black beans cause that’s what I usually have with them but I’ve always found white rice kind of bland anyway so I’m glad I used brown. Probably way better. :)

But yes! It took forever! As did cooking up the other stuff I decided to put in it and I was starving haha cooked that after the rice was done so it took even longer. :th

I simmered a lot of the juice out so it wasn’t too liquidy and the rest I think soaked into the rice.

I don’t mind the color. :)

Honestly I’ve never really been one for looks or whatever and am horrible at making fancy stuff so my motto is it might not look great but it still tastes good. :lau usually. Not always. :lau

I was a bit ruthless. I chose the one I thought was the prettiest and purest silver to replace the old silver boy who wasn't giving me fertile eggs. One from my third hatch that I thought was a hen turned out to be a roo, but he's got some really pretty markings, so I decided to keep him, especially since he got along with both the old silver boy and the new silver boy.

Today, I thought I'd butchered all of the roos plus crooked neck, then I went to clean the pen and found a boy that I'd missed. He's pretty and lucky, so I decided that he gets to live, even though he is missing an eye. He may get replaced by a fee from next week's hatch, but he gets at least another month.

I love hatching, and I'm glad that I seem to have found a market to sell some of my extra birds while still leaving me some to eat. I've decided that I'd like to keep 16-20 adult birds and keep a cycle of hatching going.

I'm finally starting to get more eggs than I eat in a day, so I can start storing some to sell and/or hatch. I have one person who wants a dozen to eat, so I sure hope my egg license comes soon.
I've gotta thin down the herd over here. I'm getting 12 eggs from 12 hens now nearly every day. If I try to sell them I still need to buy quail egg cartons, and then I won't be able to sell them or even give them away! I'm still hopeful of the flea market once it warms up a bit, fingers crossed. I'm glad you've got interested parties, it makes all the difference in the world!

I forgot to post it before but I think it turned out quite well so thanks to everyone for your help. :)

Tasted good too although the canned beans were a tad bit salty so next time I may drain them or use real (dry) beans. But was good.

And it felt kinda good actually making something different for a change/experimenting cooking something instead of eggs and spinach again lol

Which I eat way too much. :lau

And to get back on topic (somewhat)... I wonder how many quail eggs it would take to make an omelette or scrambled eggs!? :D
