➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

That means that this one is a hen. That means the the eggs are less likely to be fertile, right? Male buttons usually have one female, not a harem?

i’m not absolutely sure about that.....supposed to only pair off but my poor girls are looking haggard so i’m not exactly sure that it’s only 1:1......i had 4/6 hatch in first fertility check incubation. (i have 3 males)

I think it depends on the birds. If there's enough space, a male could have a harem. If there's not enough space, the hens will fight over the male. People have housed them both ways, as pairs and as groups. Might still have decent fertility, but he might favor one hen over the others.

I'm not sure the spots on a button quail are as consistent as a coturnix from day to day. I've had better luck using the shell color to determine how many layers in a group. For me the color has been more consistent per bird, although if you change their diet the color can change.

Also, for mine, about a month after the fluff around the eyes turns into feathers, the feathers at the vent should be pinkish if it's a boy.

How are your eggs doing?

Just candled - two quit, one didn't develop. Still not bad at all for shipped eggs so I'll take it! And the egg I put in from my hen is also developing. She's only laid one more since then; I'm trying to collect some to set but it's hard if she's only going to lay one a week, lol. Hopefully I get at least one more before the 24th because I wanted to set them for the Easter HAL.
