Are you sure there isn't something wrong with them?
They're very active. They don't like being held, but once I've caught them they'll stay put for a few seconds at a time.

I think the trick is moving kind of slowly and very smoothly. It works with almost any type of animal. A couple of years ago I was actually kind of making friends with a family of skunks that were hanging around the neighbourhood.

Are you an animal whisperer!?

You just have to understand what motivates them. Every animal out there has a full range of emotions. Understanding what triggers their instincts helps. Prey animals are afraid of being eaten. Don't move like a predator (which can be hard, because we are), and you'd be amazed at what you can get away with.

The skunks and I regularly got within a few feet of each other. One of them ran across my feet once. The first couple of encounters were a bit nerve wracking, but I stood still and calm and they just got used to me. We met mostly during my early morning walks.

That’s true!! I try not to look at my birds sometimes or I just move really slow or whatever. If they’re scared I’ll freeze for a bit haha

It’s really cool just how many emotions animals have and they’re finding out more and more every day. Even reptiles have emotions. So many people think we’re the only one with emotions and that’s just not true.

I don’t think I’m near the expert you are though!!! Haha a lot of animals like me but some don’t. :(

And oh wow that’s amazing!!! I once befriended some wild turkeys a few years ago LOL they were coming around for the bird seed from the feeders so I just started tossing them some BOSS too and at first they were scared, although even then they didn’t run far. Anyway, at first I gave it and left but eventually I started standing there when I gave it, from far away at first, and was eventually able to get closer and closer to within few feet. It was pretty cool.

I never feed wild animals. Each animal has its own behaviours. You can't expect a fox to act like a dog. You can't expect a quail to act like a chicken. I don't try to pet or touch wild animals. They're not domestic.

With domestic animals, I try to restrain them as little as possible when I handle them. The buttons may get out of my hands because I'm holding them gently enough that if they panic they get out, but that makes them calmer the next time I scoop them up. Same with cats. Cuddle, but the moment they want to leave, let them go.
