I have a 8 ft x 8 ft aviary. How many can I put in there females and males?recommend 3-6 females per male for max fertility. Can keep more.
Depends on how big the space is for the birds. Zac keeps a whole bunch with 6 females per male in community cages at 3 birds per square foot.
You will get an aggressive male. Those are delicious.
I thought so but wanted to be sure LOL
8x8 = 64 square feet x 3 is 192 birds. If you want to pack them in...I have a 8 ft x 8 ft aviary. How many can I put in there females and males?
I need to get more hide outs, but it looks so empty with 3. I’ll add more soon once the others are old enough.8x8 = 64 square feet x 3 is 192 birds. If you want to pack them in...
I keep 1 per square foot sometimes. Or 7 in 4 square feet which is close to 2 birds per square foot. Keeping on wire means cleaning is easier. I'm using the Kiki dirt boxes with wood chips which gets composted and composts well.
To answer your question, you can put between 1 and 192 in your aviary.
For comfortable and happy birds on the ground, I don't recommend 192. Poop factor would be high. What is your desired poop factor? Specifically, cleaning frequency?
Really, it does depend on the temperament of the birds. For weekly cleanings, I suggest 8 to 16 with 2-3 males. See how that works with lots of stuff to allow them to hide from each other. Larger area will allow easier integration.
I use a solid bottom hutch of about 30 square feet. A dozen birds is quite manageable and keeps cleaning frequency down. Last season I did deep litter and kept adding. This season I’m trying just a layer of wood shavings and complete cleaning every so often. I also add a separate pan of dirt for bathing. Just some thoughts.I need to get more hide outs, but it looks so empty with 3. I’ll add more soon once the others are old enough.
