➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Of course you can join in! Make sure to post pictures. We never get tired of looking at cute chicks.

Yay, thank you! Should have some pics by Saturday, hopefully! I'm excited for my second round with KC, this time ssc and tibetan tux. My jumbos from them are thriving. By the time the next order gets in I will have three incubators going.

Wow! Quail are so popular now! And It's only been a year or so since I learned they were even a viable food source. One of these days... but I have SO MANY CHICKENS. I may have overdone the hatching this year... 🤪
I'd love to have chickens! Not allowed in my 'burbs....one day, I can hope! Quails are great for people with jerky neighbors like me.

no such thing!

I’ve got 13 eggs under broody set for this weekend hatching.
From last weekend. Her buddies didn’t make it.

I have good neighbours, but I live in a suburban environment too. That's why I chose quail when I started thinking about backyard livestock.

I decided (on the unsure basis of feather growth) that I had hatched 7 male and 2 female Lt Brahmas. I lost one female when my "Patriot" (made in China 😒) energizer quit working at only one year old. 😡 🙄 Sooo, I ordered 6 (got 7) pullets from the local feed store... I'm sure you can guess the rest.

It came time to capon (neuter) the extra males. I saved out the largest (who I HOPE is a male) and the most delicate (who I expect is a female 🤷‍♀️). Of the remaining six, two were male, three probably weren't, based on my having found an ovary and a distinct lack of testes, and the last one I didn't cut. I guess I should have, but at that point I just didn't want to. They're all running around like happy little chickens this morning, so hopefully all is well. I think they were mostly pi$$ed at having been kept without food for a day & a half.

It's an invasive surgery. The bird is awake while you insert the tool and cut the testes. It's super dangerous and mostly is only used in huge corporations overseas like in France. It produces a more tender, more docile male to butcher
