Hatch day has begun. It's weird. I didn't have any early birds this time.
The first one out is a button quail. They're so tiny!

So out of 48 eggs 23 hatched. 21 were healthy, 2 had curled toes, the first curled toe chick had organs on the outside and was culled. Waiting to see if the newest one's toes will straighten, its organs seem to be intact.

Both curled toe chicks didn't not make it. Do you guys cull chicks and if so which ones do you cull?

I'll cull curled toe chicks if they don't respond to therapy and shoes. I'll also cull blind albinos or others that I know aren't going to make it.

Painters tape. That stuff is intended to come off easily. Be very careful when taking it off to prevent injury.

That might work. I haven't had any trouble getting it off, but I'm very careful.

Seriously hoping and praying at least one is female but they are very cute. The second one took an extra day and a half so the first spent a lot of time sleeping in my bra. The size of it. I nearly didn’t select that egg at all because I read that larger than normal eggs can be more difficult to hatch. It was only 40 something humidity when I woke up to them hatched though I had been bumping it up prior to going to bed.

Do we all just have worse hatches in winter?

Don't know, but mine was so bad (and I'm in temperate Hawaii) that I'm not trying Winter hatches again.

Day 18 @ 7:00am there's at least 6 maybe even 8!! Out of 10 not bad!

Oh darn! I don't have room for more birds but seeing these. . .I WANT!!
