Oh Ben, I'm so sorry.I am devastated to say...
I cannot blame any bird of prey or predator for the death of another one of our chicks... but I can only blame myself.
About an hour ago, I was walking around by the coop, trying to get Flo and the chicks ready for bed. I rounded up Flo, Chippy the chipmunk chick, and one of the black ones into their little bedroom. One of the black chicks, out of the blue, flew down from the stairwell that leads to the coop-- and landed right under my foot as I was taking a step... it seemed as if it happened in slow motion. I realized that I had just stepped on the chick- and I THOUGHT and HOPED that I stepped on its leg. It immediately began flapping its wings and going in circles with its eyes closed, dragging its feet. I thought it was maybe in shock because maybe I broke its leg. Then I realized it had never screeched when I stepped on it- almost always chicks will screech if you step on their leg... the flapping went on for about a minute. I was scared. I didn't know what to do. Flo was staring at the chick, she seemed in awe as well. I didn't pick up the chick.
In the last seconds of the flapping, I realized this is what chickens do when they are dying. Their nerves are sending out responses or what have you. It was at that moment I knew my beloved chick was dead. It stopped flapping and I find it laying there on the ground. I just killed my chick. I started yelling and crying.
I got the remaining chick and closed up Flo and the 3 chicks for the night. Then I buried the chick that died.
Up to that moment I had thought I stepped on its leg. But then I realized- stepping on its leg probably wouldn't have caused it to die. I then thought I must've stepped on its head or neck.

As I shoveled an area for the grave site, I looked at the poor chick, trying to figure out what I had stepped on. I flipped it over, and there I saw its eye was bloody. I must've stepped on the head.
I feel terrible.
One of the worst things about this is that I believe she was the only chick showing female (or rather, lacking male) traits out of the three black ones. The other two black chicks, I'd bet, are almost certainly males. Chippy the chipmunk chick is most likely a female, thankfully.
I was so excited to see how she would look when she's older.
Praying all the rest will make it to adulthood.
Have a blessed day everyone.

This man is beautiful as well- he has lots of white when he spreads his wings.. and sadly, he looks like a possible cockerel
