108 Degree Heat...My First Chicken Loss :(

Quote:
OMG..I am soooo sorry, one was bad enough, 6 would be half my little flock, I am so sorry you lost all those chickens. I like that giant ice pack idea, I will get some of those and try that, sure cannot hurt and maybe in the shade they will last a few hours.

I passed a school at lunch today with the temp. on their reader board and it did say 108. We still have ground thunder but not a drop of rain. I have spent 10 bucks this last week buying chlorine remover to put water in my pond as I have had to refill several hundred gallons this week from evaporation. I need to stop whining I guess, there are people that ae in dire circumstances from this heat and I am complaining about pond water and a chicken. I am grateful for what I have and hope others and their pets make it through this horrible heat wave with no more losses.

So sorry Darlene!

That's just awful. It's hot here too but not like that! 100 degrees expected tomorrow. I happened to be home at noon and checked the temp in our coop in the shade and it was 85. I'm worried about tomorrow too. I'm freezing yogurt containers of water to leave around the coop hoping that will help. I put them in the pets' water dishes in the house too.
Hope it cools down everywhere soon!

It happens SE. Not much you can do about it. Make sure they have shade and
lots of fresh water.

It was 96 here today and all our birds were panting. The huge exhaust fan I put in
the barn kept it an 81 degrees inside.

Sorry to hear of the loss Darlene.

I lost 1 of my week old BR's yesterday, not a mark on it, I'm sure it was the heat.

I have them completely out of the sun in a back room of my house with the windows and door open, fan running and it hit 95 inside. We have only a small window AC unit for the whole house right now and standing 5 feet from the AC it was 83 degrees.

Thank goodness its supposed to cool down a little in the next couple of days.

Ya it happens sometimes he the one closest to me in the shot!!!
He'll be missed!!! My daughter loved him he would come to her all the time!

Hope everyone and there pets make it through the east coast heatwave alright! God be with you all!

Good idea Darlene on the shallow pan - 5" might be a little deep. If they don't seem to be getting in it try pouring some out. Mine like to stand in water up to top of legs. They look like they're all standing around with their feet soaking waiting on their pedicures.

So sorry to hear that you lost your chicken.

I lost one hen so far to the heat on Sunday, and have been coming home everyday for a long lunch so I can check on "everybody" (meaning my chicks and chickens).

Maybe this is a dumb question, but does water help cool down chickens? (not drinking water, which I have lots of, of course). I tried spraying the ground around my turkeys and chickens with the hose in the hopes of cooling it off, but they all ran away. It didn't seem to affect them at all -- they just took dirt baths elsewhere and hung out in the shade. Does dirt bathing cool them down? Could their dirt bath be wet first? Not mud, just moist?

Anyways, thanks for all the ideas. Mine are going to get frozen grapes and cherry tomatoes tommorrow to peck at.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss Darlene. And I am also sorry to hear about the other chickens lost. Such a nice picture of the roo.

It hasnt been that hot here yet. That weather sounds just horrid. Last summer I would put water in their "armpits" and that would cool them down a bit, but you have to be there to do that. That airconditioner sounds like a good idea, and the water wading pools. who knew?

Never thought to put pans of water out for them. Thanks for the tip.

I went out to peek on mine earlier and my banty hens were laying on their backs with their feet up in the air in the pen. Scared me! They were just resting. It hit 93 here today in (near) Cleveland OH. I feel for all of you and Darlene - so sorry for your loss.
