The Orp with its Del cheerleader looks blue! Hope he/she makes it! You have a load of cuties in there. Are you marking the PA Dels to keep track? Thought I saw blue marker on some. I marked mine with various perm markers on the head and refreshed the color from time to time. Hard to keep track of all those yellow babies!

You guessed it we used a food coloring pen to mark the heads of the PA babies since there were fewer of them. We were going to use leg bands but they are to big for those baby feet right now. we have three sizes and the smallest ones are still just abit too big so in a few days we will try again so that we don't have to keep marking them, they are so cute we don't want to spoil it

Both the Orps in the bator look the same so if that one looks blue then the other may be as well. I too hope that he/she makes it they seem strong and are breathing well, they lift their heads and act like they are preening their fluff but they are still not up and walking about or even opening their eyes much. it is as if they are sleeping and then wake briefly with fits of chirping and wiggling but not much else then they fall back to sleep. Would you recommend maybe trying to get them some sugar water or something to motivate them?

I think they are just exhausted from working so hard. Usually, if I just let them rest in the bator, they eventually get to their feet. You certainly could do a drop or two of sugar water as you are placing those in the brooder, but they should be fine. No idea why the other one passed away, but it's probably just one of those odd things. I assure you, it's a rare occurrence with either the Orps or the Dels. I think I've only had one Orp ever do that and none of the Delawares.

I have a theory about the other Orp, I was watching it hatch and it seemed that it did not stretch the U. cord or something because there was alot of blood. much much more than I have seen from any other chick. so I figure that the blood loss made it weak, so much that it could not hang on long enough to replenish it. I was fresh out of IV drip and my needle was to big otherwise... It was either that or the bleeding was a symptom of some other developmental problem that I could not see. When Kathy told me it had died I was kinda shocked but after thinking it through I could imagine why it may have happened. None of the other Orps had this same bleeding so I am hopful they just needed a little extra nap. They are a large chick and all that growing must be tiresome.

I will be patient and let them rest.

That is why I asked if that was blood on that baby, thought it might of bleed too much as well.

Good job congrats on your hatch. I have too little orps in the pen with a broody. The other 6 eggs were duds. But those 2 are just so cute to watch with those huge orps LOL.

Sorry for the long wait folks,

I had a dr.'s appt. today and was out for a while.
The babies are doing wonderfully this morning, they just needed an extra long nap I guess. They are in the brooder with all the others

The last two are still a bit crusty but I thought they were fluffed enough for their first appearance I am so overjoyed that they are doing well I can't even tell you.
This is the first Orp that hatched
