haha! A spell-checker can do only so much!

(I completely understand your pain, btw.)

Right. Some people may get offended.

Offended by the spell checker? All it would do is add red underlines to misspelled words in the text box. The user is free to ignore the spelling suggestions...

I have stated this in the thread about the lawnmower and the roo, but I will avocate for it here as well and please forgive me if I have overlooked it mentioned somewhere else in this thread, but I really think awards, even if nothing more than a certificate of some sort, for various activities:

1) outstanding contributors to BYC

2) outstanding devotion to care for chickens (i.e. like what Lori has done for K, a roo not even her own!)

3) outstanding members that contribute to the knowledge base of the board

4) recognition of moderators whom handle threads effectively and are favored amoung members

5) outstanding contributions to poultry management within the broader community

6) members who consistantly go beyond reasonable to ensure meets or other events go well

So these are those that come off the top of my head at the moment

I'm sure others may have other ideas, and I do not want popularity contests so much as recognition to those that make this board and community the very best that it is!

I've been reading here for awhile and contributing when I could, but still have not figured out who is truely dedicated to the betterment of poutry keeping vs just posting for the sake of posting. I know this sounds harsh, and I am not known for sugar coating anything, but I honestly believe that those that work hard to make this better should be recognized publicly and everyone should know who these people are!

Thank you for this consideration, and it is just MHO.

Deb, This is a very interesting concept you have proposed. Many members are "gifted" (usually anonymously) by a fellow BYC member with a GFM membership upgrade - sometimes for a unique event, overall contributions, or just because it may be their birthday or the like.

To expand (or is it condense?) upon what you have proposed, perhaps the following might be possible: A new Forum for members to nominate other members as "BYC Member of the Week (or Month)". Of course the nominations would need to state why the Member is being nominated. Here's where it might get tricky: To make the final selection, it could either be set up as a poll for the membership to vote on, or maybe allow the mods to make a weekly selection, much like they select a Pic of the Week. Either way, at least all the nominees would receive the accolades and recognition they deserve by being nominated.

What would be extra-special was if BYC could then award that week's member with a GFM (or whatever they feel is appropriate).

This is something we've discussed a bit over the past 3 years. We actually try to award and recognize members of our community that go "above and beyond" to help others. Sometimes the recognitions are via a Private Message and sometimes awards of GFMs, gift certificates, etc.

We've decided that when we do "awards" that we do them privately vs. broadcasting to the entire membership. Our belief is that the person receiving the award will know they are appreciated without others in the community feeling badly that we skipped over them or didn't acknowledge their contributions.

We are open to suggestions, but want to avoid:

1) Popularity contests (which often happens when members vote for "best contributor"
2) Feelings like someone is getting skipped over and/or ignored

I would like to see...

1) Beter photo uploading options
2) A tab on the forum toolbar that shows my subscriptions. I would love to be able to log on to BYC and see all of the threds that I have subscribed to on one page instead of getting e-mails every time someone posts on them or hunting around for them for hours on end.

Thanks,

Ooooh....one more thing.

How about a BYC breeder index? It can include information about what state the breeders reside in, what breeds of chickens they have, and perhaps a link to their website. I would much rather buy chicks or eggs from BYC members, but I don't know who has what and where they are.

Thanks
