2017 Gosling Hatch a long!!

Just take a deep breath and relax lol geese are very fun to raise. You just have to be one step ahead of them and prepared for anything to happen. They are hardy birds but even the strongest need help from time to time.
My mom's dog came over today to steal another egg and both females attacked the little stubborn beast, she deserved everything she got and never came back the entire day. LOL I would stress over pet mice, if I wasn't sressing I would be stressing over that, I get it from my mama! I'm reading a few things here and there but want babies so I can have tame geese, these things are crazy! I've tried everything but get hisses instead of kisses. I have a rescue dog who was severely abused, the poor thing is good for nothing but digging up flowers and loving on everyone, he is the sweetest thing. I think he lays on the eggs more than the girls. I heard them flipping out in the middle of writing this message and there he was, once again, sleeping on the eggs. I live on the funny farm!

Will you be hatching the eggs yourself if you want friendly babies? If your guys do it and then raise them they'll raise the babies to act the same way around you that they do.

Pyxis is right, if you want tame goslings you would need to incubate some eggs yourself and spend as much time as possible with them every day. The goslings that the geese raise are usually little snots, even wilder than the parents. Even incubating, raising and spending time with them will not guarantee that they stay tame. 5 of mine I raised, they lived in the house, carried like puppies, I walked them to the pond everyday and sat with them for hours while they ate grass... I can't get within 50ft of them once they are turned loose with the others. Unless I have food and even then they are ready to run the first time I make a wrong move(usually breathing lol)
Ive tried taking the goslings from the geese when they hatch & keeping them for at least 2 weeks to tame them. A nightmare! They are screaming inside the parents screaming outside, anyone that goes out the door gets flogged. That bond they make when they imprint on their parents is strong. Incubated goslings Imprint on us too but I don't believe it's as strong, even if i stood there with a big orange nose and covered in feathers I still don't think they would give two honks.

Ok friends. ..I need help....I have 7 rouen ducks and 3 pilgrims geese. ..my girls have all started laying but no one is sitting. ..my geese lay in the same nest as my ducks and for every goose eggs I get it lose 2 duck eggs. Now mind you I have to literally hunt for duck eggs because they lay them where ever the stand ... and every time my ducks go to mate my gander gets very upset and attempts to stop them. Any info is very much appreciated.

Well dang! I was planning on snagging the little critters when they hatched. I guess I need an incubator or just let the dog do it since he's in there more than the females anyway. LOL I thought they would be like chickens and come running when they see you. I definitely do not want more like these 3 crazies, maybe after the babes hatch I'll give these 3 to my sister since she doesn't get close to her birds, they are for eggs only, I cannot even imagine, mine get attention daily and know I'm mama.

I guess I'm getting an incubator but I will definitely be reading up on it before I attempt anything...now to find that post!

Even my chickens like to lay where the ducks lay. They love the community nest. If your ducks are new to laying it seems to take them time to get the whole nest thing down to a science. Mine did the same just walk along and out comes an egg but eventually they learned on their own to lay inside their houses. Make sure they have nice comfy bedding and some privacy. It takes a while to get a broody so don't get discouraged. Before you know you'll at least have a broody goose. I don't know if your Rouens will brood or not so many breeds have it bred out of them now. So if you want ducklings you may have to use a bator or use your broody goose to hatch both. But give them time it's still early.

As for the mating thing not only does my gander get upset when my ducks mate but my goose oh boy they both will surround the ducks that are mating and put a stop to it, but my ducks will also wait till the geese aren't around to jump into the pool and mate so what your seeing is all very natural. I say my geese like a well run barn yard and get upset with anything they don't start.

You can incubate goose and duck eggs but I'd wait for a broody goose if it was me. Your going to have one of 2. they may not have the amount of eggs they are wanting to sit on yet. Plus it's still early in the breeding here anyway I have even gotten my first goose egg yet. It's such a blessing to watch a family of geese raise their goslings, everyone participates including the ganders.

You can get them to come when you call for them or whistle, mine come when I whistle, they will also come when I have feed in a scoop. They aren't like chickens, my chickens would see me and run to me then follow me around like I was mother hen and they were chicks. I didn't raise them lol.
Geese to me, for comparison, are like cats of the bird world. They are independent and only need/want you when it's convenient for them, you are the food source.

You can take them and raise them, I've read about a few on here that have been successful with that but I wasn't. Mainly because I have other animals and a young daughter so I'm in and out of the house dozens of times a day and the flogging every time the door opened wasn't worth it lol

Getting an incubator isn't a bad idea. It's always good to have one handy if for some reason a goose abandons a nest half way through you can pop them in and save them. If there is a market for goslings in your area you can hatch some extras every year and make a few extra dollars.

I had trouble finding these geese, 45 minutes away. I wish I could find some grey ones, those were beautiful! I forgot who posted but she was all the way in Canada. It would be nice to find someone close in Oklahoma. Norman is the closest main city I can think of and it's not too far from Oklahoma City. I might call some feed stores, I think the one in Purcell might carry geese but not sure when they start. I would probably invest in diapers and drag the poor thing around, it would definitely fit in my purse for awhile.

I am not sure how well geese sell but since I had such a hard time finding them selling might be a good idea...maybe..hmmm...I would probably stress over someone abusing them.
