So they definitely eat a lot... Their feeder empties twice a day. Although, a lot of that volume goes to the floor. I guess a lot of food waste is inevitable? Should I let it get empty so they eat it off the floor? Should I worry about poop getting in the floor food?

What kind are you using?
Mine is on top of a 2x4. I have little to no waste, no shavings in feed either. They are little piggies though.

I will try the 2x4. I have the water up on one to reduce shavings getting in the water, but I suppose raising the food would also help keep them from being able to scratch it out!

How old should chicks be before I slip them table treats like bread crumbs?

I will try the 2x4. I have the water up on one to reduce shavings getting in the water, but I suppose raising the food would also help keep them from being able to scratch it out!

It should help immensely. I have one of the long plastic ones so it fits perfect on a 2x4! Good luck, feed can be so darn expensive. I pay $35 a bag, so I try to eliminate waste as much as possible. Doesn’t always work though.

You want to stick to protein rich foods until they start laying if you do give treats. Boiled egg, meal worms, yogurt, are all great treats to give to young chicks. I wouldn’t give treats like bread crumbs until they are much older. 6 or 7 months. They do also need grit if they’ll be eating anything other than their starter/grower feed. Hope this helps!
