6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Ahhh...My eggs have been at 73-78 degrees for who knows how long!!! Had a power outage for at least 6 hours. Power on...hence the 1am freak out message...and warming bator, again. Will my babies be okay?

When can we start on the wine?
Now...now!!!! Lol
Hi peeps! The thirteen eggs i put in my mini adv. started to hatch Tuesday night. Out of the thirteen eggs that went in 9 hatched. 2 were from a new layer and weren't even fertile so tectonically 9 out of 11 hatched. Is anyone wanting a Silkier or a Sizzle chick? Three of them have giant domes. There is a really neat one that is white color with black stripes on its back, this is a first for me. My parts came in for my DIY incubator but i still did not get it finished for the New Years hatch along so i improvised. I ordered a 12 dc incukit to use for a brooder but in the last moments i gr abed a medical cool or and used it as a incubator. I have never tried to build an incubator and hope i get A good hatch rate out of these. Temps are staying at 99.5 and only varying +-.5 degree.I'm just not sure about the humidity so i am going to wing it. Every persons answer is different.
What cute babies you have!! They look so fluffy.

Hope everyone else is getting along okay. I'm so sorry every one that's waiting for a package! So frustrating!

So, my thermometer is digital and has a probe that is supposed to go outside to monitor the outside temp. Well I put that probe inside the 'bator and the main unit on the dresser angled so I can read it from my desk. For two weeks, I've left the 'bator plugged in and have been monitoring the inside temp. The high was 102 and the low was 98 so the average temp has been around 100.

Well, I set my eggs at around midnight yesterday and watched to see how long it would take to get them back up to temp. I was very nervous for that first hour because it would slowly creep up to 71 then slip just as slowly back down to 70. It did this for about an hour and I was like why is it taking so long for temp to climb?

I mean, I knew it would take awhile but I just didn't seem to be making any leeway at all! Finally, after that first hour of worrying and fighting the urge to adjust the temp, it dawned on me! I forgot to put the probe back in the vent hole! It was laying beside the 'bator!!! D'oh!

That's what happens when the government spends too much on stupid stuff and has to cut costs in areas that matter to cover it. lol

Our mail lady, Misty, is a real gem! She's always got a smile on her face and never a bad word for anyone...at least that I've known.

I asked her about a mix up with the a delivery we'd received once and she said that the government had closed down our nearest sorting station so everything was pre-sorted in Pittsburgh then sent out from there where it had to be hand sorted by the post offices which causes further delay. She used to run promptly at 11:00 A.M. but now, it fluctuates from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.

How many people heat with wood? I do and I get morning temps around 98 in the bator and 102 in the afternoon, evening. I try to keep that room stable but between the kids and dog I get about a 4 degree diff. This is my first winter hatch.

My winter bator temps swing about the same & my eggs honestly hatch better in winter than summer. Spring & fall are my absolute best, but summer is worst. 98-102 should be just fine for a still air. That's what mine runs all winter.

Here at my house, it's interesting to see that different people will just take their shoes off to walk around my home.  No mud room, so if it's been raining/snowing..some will, some don't.  Some will even if it's been nice out.   :)

No mudroom here but everyone must use the back door & must remove shoes upon entering. My yard is almost always a muddy mess unless it's frozen.

I have 5 slow pokes still in the incubator, taking their sweet time! So we might set a bit later in the day. Maybe I will find more fresh eggs in the barn to add :) . I found 2 of the RIR eggs are cracked. I put a cost of fingernail polish over just that area. I wonder if that ever works
I had 2 eggs that were cracked earlier this year in a shipment. I use wax not finger nail polish 1 hatched 1 didn't
Boy feeding is going to be fun in the morning water very where. Horse pasture flooding to...I know we need it !!!!!!!
Our 4 mules have mud caked on them. And when the farrier comes, it is an hour prep, getting the mud out of the hooves and them standing on something dry mud out of the hooves and them standing on something dry! Here is our hog & dog in the mud. My guess is that the pig is pretty pleased with your weather!

I might be in for this year. I say might because a power outage may have knocked me out already, but the older eggs made it, so fingers crossed I see life in these two eggs. I have set two eggs from my project chickens, and I may set some quail, if my female coturnix cooperates and lays me some in time!
