6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Had to post one more picture because I feel like I hit the chicken lottery! The newest chick is a naked neck! Earlier this year I lost one of my two naked necks to an impacted egg and I was so sad. Of course she was my favorite. My 2nd had just started laying when I set these eggs to hatch and since they all use the same nest I wasn't sure if any of hers were in this batch. But now I guess I know. I feel very excited and fortunate!

Adorable! I love the NN. I have a white one. She's a big girl. Pretty mellow. And, I love them with the bow ties!

Important question, anyone hear anything about the flu this year? My niece just called and told me that she was in the hospital last night with a fever of 105 degrees! They put her on morphine and wanted to soak her in ice but she refused. She's doing better this morning but I was wondering how bad it is. She said the flu shot isn't working this year either and that it's bad down there in Texas so be careful.

It is bad this year--a type A. The recomendation was to insist on getting anti viral medicine ASAP if you get the fever.

I imagine those of us over 50 will do better with it since we have been exposed to it as children.

The vaccine this year missed the boat.

figures first time did the flu shot cuz doctor talked me into it and it's not gonna do any good

Well, I'm lost, so I'll just do a summary..

Set 66 eggs, On day 10 or 11 I bought a ten pack of flashlights and removed two clears and one blood ring when I was FINALLY able to candle because all my flashlights just vanished. Locked down 61 eggs after candling and removing a quitter and another clear I didn't catch the first time. Three are questionable, but I left them in because they are really dark eggs. That leaves me with 58 I'm reasonably sure will try to hatch and three maybes.. in 3 incubators.

I'm sorry I'm not able to keep up. I want to tell everyone who has chicks and good news that you made me smile! and everyone who's life isn't going quite their way, I hope you find peace, and everyone who cheers on every one else gets an extra special gold star in my book. It's a rare person who can find the time to express the joy they feel over someone else's victory or to show caring when someone has a loss.

:)

Thanks. I think I understand now.
Temp sounds good, but humidity seems a little high. Perhaps you could take some more water out of the channels?
I can take all the water out, and use dishes instead. There are only two channels, I emptied the first one, so the humidity is this high with only one channel filled.

Mine shipped from back east. None were cracked...Will update on how they hatch. Can't candled them too dark.

Mine shipped from Kentucky and 5/7 are doing great... please hatch... please hatch

Success!

I have 8 little fuzzies now with 2 more zipped and just mustering the energy to emerge and join the flock. I was so excited I could hardly sleep last night and now I'm happy that they all seem healthy and vibrant. Beverly is a trooper!

Ha ha, please don't judge my bobo next boxes. I find so much plastic garbage washed up on the beach an I'm obsessed with finding uses for it. This is an old milk crate. Sometimes they are a little broken and need some zip-tying :) My hens don't mind, though.

Thanks for all of the help and advice on this thread! Especially toward the end when my excitement had me molesting poor Beverly every half hour. I'll look forward to the next hatch-a-long.

Good luck to you all and can't wait to see the pix!

Cute!

ok some peeps have mentioned humidity up and down and shrink wrapping the chicks.............does shrink wrapping happen when the humdity goes up and down? I had thought shrink wrapping happened when you didnt have enough humdity?

Shrink wrapping is a combination of not absorbing yolk, size of pip, humidity and time. Any egg will shrink wrap if the chick does not zip soon enough after pipping.
@ronott1
is there a separate cutest baby chick thread for the contest, or do we post here?
I will set up a new thread soon.
