7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

Hi everyone! Count me in!
I'll be initially setting chicken eggs from my own flock. I didn't have good fertility with my test hatch last month so I'm working on getting some shipped eggs as well. I'm waiting on word from a breeder, and if her hens are laying well enough they will ship them mid-week.

My flock's eggs will be SLW roo over EE's, barred rocks and/or black sex-links. Those are going in my Brinsea mini Eco. Saving the Hovabator for the shipped eggs since there will be more of those. :)
Welcome!

I have added you to the members list.

Who else is collecting the eggs from their own hens? I'm only getting 1 chicken egg per day and 2 quail. I might not hatch a lot. Lol

I am hatching from my own! I have barred rock, white rock, black fethered leg cross of some sort, blue americana, wheaten americana, and wellsummer. For roosters i have a Barred rock, blue americana, wheaten americana, welsummer, and a barred rock/ well summer as a test on making Welbars. The eggs I will put in will all be barn yard blends because I currently do not have them separated. I had 2 months of NO eggs. I figured they stopped for molting. Well, after too much time passed, I changed things up. I got extra calcium. I am treating for worms and cocci (we saw blood in poop....AGAIN). I also put lights in their coops 24/7. It took a couple weeks but it started with one egg, then 3 eggs, then 5, 7, 8, and it is still going up. So, that is what is going on here. I live in central NH...no so yet...YAY!

I love that..."barnyard blends!"

I'll be

hatching my own if all goes well. Mostly EE's unless I get a "barnyard blend" and maybe a few OEGB if she stops holding out on me.

how many contests are there going to be?
We should have 3 random posts, guess eggs set and guess chicks hatched. There may also be a Ginger bread contest and a funky chick hatched contest.

I am thinking about a best hatch a long member too.

Please don't leave a light on for 24 hours. They need sleep.

X2

Turn the light on early in the morning, a few hours before sunrise. If it's a plugin lamp, use a Christmas tree timer. My father did some research while deciding how to program my X10-controlled hen house light and found out that it is best to add extra light before dawn and to let sunset be the "lights off" time.

FYI- My two pullets are laying fine with just 13 hours of daylight.
