8week old chick sneezing, boogers no eye discharge

That's the same shoes I'm sitting it, new chicks in the brooder.... this morning besides waking up voiceless, I went out to find something had gotten my only laying hen and her half eaten body was just lying there!!

I guess the Myans where right.

I may be over dramatic about this but i apparently totally suck at having chickens. As hard as it is for me to make the decision I've decided to cull the sick birds in order to save the rest. I may end up culling all my older chicks by the time its all over. And my turkey- I think shes sick as well. She hangs out with the chicks more than the adult birds, I've thought something was wrong with her all along she doesn't seem to have as much life as the chickens but I have no experience with turkeys. I don't want to be held responsible for anyone else's flocks getting sick, and biosecurty with a three year old isn't easy to practice, although I will be implementing some new rules. I feel awful like I could be making the wrong decision and killing chickens that just have compulsive sneezing problems... I am going to call around and see if we even have an extension office, I know there is one in our old state but I've never heard of one here.

Now I just need to know how to clean up all this mess...

In the meantime I'm going to be scouring all the information so I waln't feel responsible for anymore mistakes wiping out my flock!

Have you treated them yet? I would try sectioning them off and medicate them! I love my girls and hopefully she only has a little cold and will be better the end of the week. The lady at the feed store was like, just wait, give them the medication, they get colds like us. If the meds do not work, i will take them to the Vet that has a specialist, it is about an hour away from me. I just did a lot of research and calls to people in the area, maybe do the same for your girls before culling her!!

I feel in time if someone will be chronic they will get infection back or they die. I do not worry so much about being carrier as to getting them well. To use area after you have had sick birds in it. I take spray bottle like old 409 bottle or buy spray bottle and i make solution 3/4 water and 1/4 chlorox bleach. I spray the whole area with this and then I wash it with the hose to rinse it out. I spray the waterers with bleach and scrub them up with comet. I wash it liberally with good water hot if available to ensure we don't spread any illness. I like to give tylan 50 shots mixed with 1cc of penicillin and 1/2cc of tylan 50 for grown hen. I decrease dose to match size of chicken and I give injection on breast under skin. The reason I mix it is it works better mixed and tylan can be so hard on tissue injected and I have alot less trouble that way. I strongly believe in adding it to water with the animal recieving shots too. It is tough bug and that will get rid of it doing it like that because you don't have anytime that they medication levels are low. I like to boil egg and crush it with potatoe masher shells and all and mix dry minute oatmeal in with them to make meal and feed it to sick chickens for energy and to increase their protein intake so they can heal.
I also feel chicken get many different kinds of bacterial infections that are with respiratory symptoms and the only way to tell what it is exactly is to do cultures and identify the bug.

hi was reading your forum and im also having a problem with my rooster he's around three months old and just started sneezing and breathing through his mouth about a week ago and this morning i found my other rooster who was healthy and showed no signs of being sick dead in the coop.

I would get them started on some medicine. I would give them a shot of tylan and penicillin and add tylan to the water for at least 5 days. I have given tylan orally but I don't get near as good as results as I do giving it initially by injection. I always give tylan 50 1/2cc and 1cc of penicillin mixed together in syringe for respiratory. Then add 3cc per gallon of water of the injectable tylan and I change it at least every 3 days more often if it was in summer months setting in heat but now we are not hot so not a worry. I give the injection under skin on breast.

Well my ladies are improving! Been treating for 2 days, bubbles are going away and she seems a little more active.

I give then 5ml in there water of tetracyline powder and refresh it every 24 hours. Also I have been spraying the one with the bubbles with Vetericyn in her face/ eyes :)

I am glad they are improving. Congratulations! I like tetracycline powder too. Let us know how they do. I am not big advocate of cull them or any of that. Just make sure and clean good behind these and after you get them better to clean the area they are in real good.
