A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Karen, don't worry about the pic. If you really want gross go look at some of Kathy's sinus surgery pics. Or the Poop Page is equally delightful. Good sign she's eating & drinking. Use an antibiotic to quell infection. Let her cuddle in your lap all day.
Word is, still no power in Memphis. I'm heading home tomorrow. Power or not. Uggg

Memphis, How'd you fare last night? Glad I decided not to move the Turkeys to pasture yesterday... Their new house is on end and in the fence. Going out in a bit to figure out how to right it... and repair it. ARG! :he

Well, we lost power last night for about four hours, the battery backup for the bator lasted about two. When the power finally did come on, the temp was 83... What are the chances my poults will survive?

I say all that were going to hatch will probably still hatch. They just might be a little late. I've woken up with my bator down in the 60s before with no idea how long it was out and still had a decent hatch.

I'm up in Missouri....but apparently it got REALLY bad in Memphis. My neighbor called. We are among the 150,000 without power. Estimates over a week to get all the power back up. Over 100 trees down in the roads. My house & girls are fine. Glad I'm in Ste. Genevieve. Hope they get our power up in before I need to go home!

I hope they get the per back on quickly for you! Glad everything and everyone are safe. You guys are getting some serious storms down there and here I am just comparing about the rain!

also do a search on byc about blu-kote. I've never used it but a LOT of people say it helps.

I use Blu kote and antibiotic ointment for any injuries and have had resounding success.

Here is what her head wound looks like. She is eating & drinking & pooping. But I figure she isn't out of danger yet.

I would definitely spray with blue coat then slather antibiotic ointment over it (ointment several times a day). But first, before that, it should be cleaned with rubbing alcohol and peroxide. Just one time though (I use a cotton ball to apply it). I've had a couple chicks with severe head injuries heal well from this treatment. One was skinned by a turkey hen, one was scalped and picked and needed stitches (Mira for anyone who remembers her). As long as she's still eating and drinking and you treat her wound, she should be fine.

I still say blu-kote is over hyped. The only thing it does that a good antiseptic ointment doesn't is color the wound. Swat does the same thing and keeps out flies.

Also I use to use peroxide until it was pointed out to me it can actually inhibit healing. cause scars and destroy good flesh. I have stopped using it. Do a google search on it, I was amazed at what the studies find.

I have a young PC cockerel that was skinned from the top of the head to the bottom of the neck. I used swat on it. It is still doing good. I expected dead by now. Amazing how some of them recover and others get a pin prick and die...I figure they are Canadian stock when they die, not hearty and from the VWN so they really have nothing to live for.
