A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Rjohns....you guys getting some of this rain? We are supposed to get over 6 inches starting tonight. Blah! Looked like Feedman is getting a load too.

Both my little Sussex are laying. Had two little poulet eggs in the nest box. Still NO turkeys eggs. Weird! My girls are slacking!!
thats a lot of rain! :hugs

well it rained most of the day yesterday and freezing rain before dawn today.
I think they said about 6 inches here too... roads and houses are flooded all over.. poultry yard is a mess :barnie

I checked in the usually hidey holes before I locked the coops up for the night... :old

yep a bedraggled chicken hen, 'stinker', was standing at the coop door this morning. I took her in to dry out since it's below freezing. I put her in with 'lucky', the not quite right pullet that survived the hawk attack staying the winter in my living room parrot cage. Of course she started pecking lucky so lucky got to go out with the thanksgiving brood... stinker, the wet hen, was their broody. She has been a pain since she was little. I thought she had to be a boy for months. She kept jumping up on my lap as a chick and still jumps up on my shoulder if I am sitting out there :hugs... keeps hopping the dividing fences and changing coops.. and just had to sit on eggs in NOVEMBER :rant
She certainly has a outgoing personality and is one of my favorites:love, but a pain.:smack

ok I am very curious how big are your heritage turkey eggs?? I have been getting a few from a friend to incubate but they are only 50g or so?? I am wondering if they will size up?? or if that is a normal size? I had got some from another friend in Oct 2017 hers were closer to 70g but they were from a couple of broad breasted white turkeys so I was wondering if the size difference had to do with breed??

My biggest eggs come from Rosabelle, a 3 year old Royal Palm hen. The jenny eggs are about 2/3 the size of her eggs, and Rosabelle has eggs that overflow jumbo cartons by a pretty good margin.

Thank you for the response! I was wondering if a difference of age had something to do with it.
There is a little bit of it that depends on the age of the hen. Their first eggs can be on the small size like a pullet but their is a lot more to the individual hen. I have hens that lay what I consider a normal egg which will just fit into a jumbo egg carton, some that lay a slightly smaller egg and one that laid eggs as big as a goose egg and will not fit into a jumbo egg carton. She always laid huge eggs right from the start.

This is very helpful information! I hope to hatch more babies this spring.
