A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Happy new year! My poor turkey guardian has been really upset because all the neighbors shoot fireworks during New Year's, hopefully now it has quieted enough I can let him back out with his babies and go to bed myself! I spent quite a while just hanging out with him while he buried his head in my lap to make the big noises go away. We put him in the fenced front yard so he would not bolt and get lost. He is such a good, boy, but he looks really big and isn't always stranger friendly being a guardian so if he got out I would worry about him getting shot!

I have lots of turkeys this year as the season starts. I likely also won't get turkey eggs until March because I would have to turn on lights for them. I do turn on lights for the chickens, but not usually for the turkeys. Some day, I plan on getting proper poultry barns. The turkeys live in my great big hay storage barn, and roost in the rafters 20 feet off the ground. A few dummies roost along the support beams on the walls or on top of the haystack, but the barn does not have a whole lot of lights in it except in the one side pen. It sort of shines throughout the barn, but it did not seem to make enough of a difference last year. The turkeys still did not start laying until March, so I will save the money and not turn on lights for them. Besides, they hide their eggs so I have to find them before they freeze. The chickens have nesting boxes that they will use so I can find them much easier. Since Zeus has gotten better from his 3 week veterinary mandated crate recovery time from shoulder pain (growing pains? wrestling too much with Apollo? OCD? who knows?) the fox that terrorized my poultry has moved on. I have seen signs that he comes close enough to be at the bottom of the hill, but no closer. If Zeus caught that fox, he would hopefully kill it.

Apparently there was a Great Pyrenees that killed 8 coyotes in a battle in Georgia. He was a 20 month old male and he had a pregnant mate nearby as well as the sheep and he jumped the fence to confront a pack of 11 and killed 8 on the spot.

Fortunately he has recovered from his wounds.

Here's the big baby hiding his head during fireworks. I had him on the porch during the booms so he wouldn't bolt. At about 130 I let him back out. He went to check hus turkeys first thing.

Happy New Year, everyone, a little late!

Here is the soup I made with Soup, my Bourbon Red tom:

And I also pressure canned for the first time!
8 quarts of turkey stock (4 are still in the canner). Plus I froze 6 quarts worth, which is when I decided I couldn’t keep freezing it.

I ran 3 batches of stock with Soup’s carcass. Then after straining the last batch I threw everything left in the pot to the chickens. I’d say I got my money’s worth out of that bird!
