So you raise turkeys like I raise Zucchini.  I can't say what it tastes like cause I don't eat it.


I must do things wrong, I find my heritage turkeys take over a year to be large enough to eat.

see told you I don't know eating them, my husband eats them, I don't eat zucchini either unless it inside something with chocolate. I stand by my original statement, they're pretty.

Hi everyone! I'm new to raising poultry. I have a 15 week old blue slate turkey. Her snood hangs way past her beak when she is relaxing or eating. And she gobbles. We thought only toms gobbled. Is that true?

Now for the bad news. You do not have a hen, you have a tom, odds are 95-5. When you said the snood hangs way beyond the beak, I figured tom, when you said gobbles you cinched it.


BTW I have blue slates and love them!

Definitely a tom. I've never had a hen with a snood longer than about a half inch & definitely never had 1 gobble. I have had 1 very gender confused girl strutting this summer though. I penned her with the young bbw's & she quit strutting & started laying again. Silly girl!

I showed the picture to my wife who is not a poultry person but watches mine for me.... and she said, "he really thinks that is a hen?"

OK, so... Now what? I have 6 chickens in there with him... Do I have to worry about mixed breeding? Will he get aggressive? I was looking forward to turkey eggs! What do I call him now?

I've never had turkeys before. The farm supply said hen.

This is who I fell in love with at the store. Gender doesn't matter, I love him any way!
