He was so cute and loved to cuddle. Then he got big and stopped... Just like my teenage son.

Thats it, they did call them broilers. Meat turkeys.

So it seems the general consensus is: boy, black blue slate. At 4 months I'm hoping there are no more surprises!

Except onee thing... I felt a funny lump on his chest. Like a bunch of quills in a clump.any ideas what that could be?

he was the only one, the rest were white and the called them boilers I think.

The term they used is broilers, I bet.  

He was the lone turkey.. Poor guy!    I am guessing someone bought the rest of them if they were blues and did not want the poor black guy. I am kind of surprised the feed store bought him to resell, for some reason, turkey snobs to do like black turkeys. I think mine is kind of cute.............

Of course I am not saying anyone here is a turkey snob...      I think someone said once it had to do with the black pin feathers at processing time.

Like I said, black slates come in very handy when you wish to produce all blue. Black paired with lavender gives 100% blue. Here's a rundown on slate genetics:

Black with no slate gene=black
Black with 1 slate gene=blue
Black with 2 slate genes=lavender

Black + Black =100% black
Black + Blue = 50% black & 50% blue
Black + Lavender =100% blue
Blue + Lavender = 50% blue & 50% lavender
Blue + Blue = 25% black, 50% blue & 25% lavender

The same works with bronze to make red slates & lilacs
Bronze with no slate gene = bronze
Bronze with 1 slate gene = red slate
Bronze with 2 slate genes = Lilac

I will be breeding my Black in the spring. I think it is a girl though.

I have another black but it is just a young'un, it is JJ and Ethel's baby. Which are my rust/red slates (whatever they are) It is still living with Ethel, I am a little worried about it though as it is so small compared to the others.

I am not sure who my older Black ones parents are, but I think she is from the blues.

I am cracking up! This is too funny for me at the moment!

I had all sorts of "highly informative quips"... but there is no point now! It has all been said.

After I saw the poult pic, I knew that Grady was not a BBB. I wanted to say he was becoming a man and getting his beard.

I wanted to tell Memphis that her new turkey is a hen, spurs and snoods develop weeeellll before a year. And she is all dainty looking.

And really, Ralph, don't tell your DW you were wrong. We like to sink our claws in... or spurs, whatever term you prefer.
And I know that you know if you EVER get rid of Penguin, you will be getting a divorce. Or will have the coldest winter on record in MN.
