A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Silkie had said when I first posted pics of Banshee that he was a lavender, not a blue. I was hopeful for lavender babies with the blue and chocolate. I wonder what I will get with a chocolate and a lavender? I guess some chocolates, some lavenders, and maybe some that are a really light lavender. Or a black. They both have black genes. I don't know.
Really, I suppose it doesn't matter. I am just rambling while I put off going outside since it is freezing cold here this morning.

Have you been on the turkey color genetics thread or on Porters calculator?
Very helpful. I have to look up the gene codes on his page then enter them into the calculator.

Whew...thankfully Penguin is ok! Poor guy. Any idea how he got hung up? Things are progressing well with my two adopted hens. Learning a lot about turkey behavior. I can't get over how friendly they've become. Had the BR on my lap yesterday evening sound asleep. The Blue Slate got jealous & ended up on the arm of the chair. Both love their heads scratched. Still trying to understand their varied vocalizations. They sound like a couple of aliens with their trills & chirps!
How long will they continue to lay eggs???

I love how affectionate and friendly they are. Last night, I was sitting on the bench in the yard and of course, Adam had to jump up on my lap to get some love and attention. Then Pebbles was jelous so she jumped up to. Before I knew it, the rest of them were up on the back of the bench beside my head on either side lol

Now Ralph.  I KNOW you know better.  Do not even entertain the idea of sending Penguin anywhere.  Your wife will smell it on you.  You will have trouble before you even do anything!  Not to mention you are already in the dog house for Cookie.  Even though she agreed, I'm sure she is still unhappy about it.

I'm sure Silkie can give you ideas for who to breed with Penguin to get pretty birds.

Yup

Yeah, she told me I could breed him to a lavender and get blues.  I might have to do that.

Or lock him up during breeding season and not let him have a hen.

Black is the base color for blue slates. You can breed him to black, blue or lavender to keep pure genetics...or mix him with another color & see what kind of pretty babies he makes.

Silkie You are right, I am not going to be showing birds. I will just keep the ones I like ( read my wife likes) and the rest will grace a table somewhere unless I find another turkey person that wants some.

I have another little black, BUT it is Ethels and JJ's the lavender/red/rusty/lilac whatever they are turkeys.. and there is a looks almost bronze but "off" some how in that batch. These are the ones Ethel is raising so they are not really into people yet. Ethel is not really OK with me playing with her babies either.. Is black the base color of them too?

Results from Porter's Turkey Calculator:

Self Blue = Lavender

Self blue tom crossed with chocolate hen should produce 100% blue slate. Chocolate tom crossed with self blue hen should produce 50% self blue toms and 50% chocolate slate hens.
