It is interesting to watch how delicately heritage hens move their feet around the little ones. I have watched them make a circling move with each foot before putting weight on it as they make sure they are not stepping on one of the little ones. Unfortunately little ones can get knocked all over the place when a mama hen goes after what she considers a danger to them. The perceived danger may be something as simple as another flock member getting too close. You called it R2elk....Daisy has claimed my baby Sussex. She's softly talking to them. They were scratching at the dirt & she took her beak & slowly scratched with them. She let them hop on her again. And demonstrated the water dish. She's very cautious moving around them. After about 15 minutes I tried to get her out of their little pen. No go...had to pick her up & haul her off. Was hoping a chicken would take an interest. Oh well. Just as well it's Daisy....she's so laid back & level headed.
Be careful not to give them too many mealworms. Mealworms are 50% protein and should be considered a treat only. The total amount of all treats should not exceed 10% of their total diet. They didn't like watermelon or zucchini either... so far they like grass and bugs. Especially mealies.
Daisy wants to adopt and mother them and will not intentionally hurt them. Chicks or poults crawling around on a hen turkey is a normal occurrence and she will gladly provide them warmth and protect them at any time.Your right R2elk. Daisy sort of tip-toes around the babies. As soon as they start using her for a trampoline I get a bit worried & put them back in the brooder. Although she doesn't seem to care....
I am battling some European Hornets. Have one in the house right now and it is larger than my thumb. If I catch it, do you think it will make a turkey snack? I mean, these things are HUGE.Be careful not to give them too many mealworms. Mealworms are 50% protein and should be considered a treat only. If I do not catch it before I go to bed, I WILL be barring my door and stuffing a towel under the sill. I really have no interest with sleeping with this thing.
