I had to do my September AI/MG/Ms testing yesterday... I know September is over...I was thinking it was October testing...DUH... The USDA vet reminded me I had screwed up last week.....

I have a new USDA vet young gal about 25ish.. Lives about 2 miles from me, so I have to be good now....

We did the turkeys first. One of the TOMS busted my jaw. Well, not busted as in broken bone. But busted as hit me like a sledge hammer with his wing. I have a bruise, an abrasion a scar and a huge bite inside my mouth... Said turkey is going to be going into the Segregation Cell with the Rude Bullying Tom, and fed tons of corn for 6 weeks. Then go to a friends for dinner.....

When we entered the cull pen (chickens) there was a dead cockerel on the ground. I went over and picked it up and looked at it. She saw the rear end had the feathers pulled out and the butt flesh was bloody and eaten. She ask " What killed it"

I said" I was not sure but I would open it up before cremating it"

She then asked " Didn't a predator kill it"..
I said " nope, it died of something else,"

She then asked " well, what ate it".

I said "the other chickens"

She asked " they eat their own dead?"

I said "yep"

She said " I did not know that"

I then told her, "Yep they are little raptor like dinosaurs and will swarm the dead in seconds"

She asked " really"

I said " Yep, which is why if you fall down around chickens you have to get up right away or they will swarm you and start eating"

Her face went white at this.. and her eyes were huge...

I had to tell her it was a joke, but it was priceless........

Well, I'm glad the pied piper thing still works. boys got into a snood pullin contest and knocked the fence down. I came out the back door to see what was up and 40 turkeys in the back yard along with some hens. Walked up, fixed the fence, opened the gate and they all filed in, that all but three tweens who haven't learned how to use the gate. They still go through the fence.:barnie
 
Turkey questions, if I could have some input please!

Are mottled blacks a smaller breed? My Bourbon reds seem to be outgrowing her, even though they are females. And I think they are bullying her. When i put her in my lap today, she got very calm, and turned her head around. The other Turkey was coming up to her and trying to peck her head. When does bullying become a problem? The mottled black is my favorite, and I don't want to see anything happen to her.

Yes, mottled blacks tend to be smaller than the bourbons, just like royal palms. My mottled hen, Cuddles is the same way. She will sit on my lap and turn her head away and the Bourbon red hens will come over to try to peck at her. It's jeolousy, plain and simple. She's trusting you to protect her while she's getting your attention and doesn't want to give it up, even if she'll get pecked for it.

Thank you! I was starting to suspect she was sick or something, because she was larger when they all hatched. Glad to hear it's just them being jealous. That's what I was thinking, but I'm still new to all of this stuff.

They are! Especially on a chilly day like yesterday. They are so warm! Do you remember the term you used before for the turkey friendliness factor? I can't seem to find it, but I would like it to reference again later.
