LOL - I tried to tell her that in the beginning - blue slate to blue slate. Anyway, she isn't going to get those now. Just note - she found the birds online complete with a link back to Porters. In fact (there was a pause here while I listened some more), the more I hear, the more I am convinced either the person with these birds have no idea what they signed - OR a total disregard for the contract itself.Crossing Recessive Slates with a Slate will not produce a Lavender. I know that the breeder contract that Porter had written up prohibits the people that bought them from crossing them with any other varieties of turkeys and does require Porter's approval for the sale of offspring. Violation of the terms of the contract calls for the forfeiture of the turkeys involved and the repossession by Porter's.
If she wants Lavenders, all she has to do is to breed a Blue Slate to a Blue Slate. That pairing will produce 50% Blue Slates, 25% Lavenders and 25% Blacks. Once the Lavenders are obtained, breeding Lavender to Lavender will yield 100% Lavenders.
Breeding a Blue Slate to a Recessive Slate will produce Barred Slates and Barred Blacks that are carrying the recessive bronze (b) and slate (sl) genes.
I do know that if Porter learns about someone planning to cross Recessive Slates with dominant Slates that someone will probably get sued.
(another pause and different day)
It seems there has been an ongoing "firestorm" for lack of a better word regarding this Recessive Blue Slate contract on the BYC website. Personally, I don't have a particular problem with it especially since I have no intention of getting involved and certainly no interest in stirring up more drama. (I have enough fall into my lap on a daily basis without looking for it.) Since it was the agreement made and with no idea how strong the contract is, that would be between Porters and the buyers.
Hopefully, my sis has opted to go with my reasons and is looking at regular Blue Slate eggs instead.
All that said, these poults were advertised on a well-known sale site with at least one picture that I believe is from Porters. The person selling said there would not be a problem breeding to other varieties, including Blue Slate as long as none were sold as RBS birds. I believe that differs from the contract itself, but hey - I'm not an attorney. I did think it was odd, though - but then again, I think a lot of things are "odd".
