A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I made a nest box for the chickens from a large planter. Similar to what you did but I attached the board on the outside which prevents them from rolling.

Mine are old 200 lb mineral licky tubs for horses. The horses were finished with them anyways. We attached them to the barn frame with screws that had huge washers to brace them, there's three of those screws so they won't wiggle. There is a lip around the inside edge where we put some scrap wood to make the edge to prevent rolling eggs, just sawed corners and sort of shaped them and screwed them in. There are some scrap 2x4 pieces to serve as perches for them to jump up without having to jump directly inside. I had been using these tubs on the ground and bracing them with boards, but the dogs would not leave the nests alone on the ground. Turkey eggs are just too tempting for them, especially Apollo. Zeus knows I want the eggs but will take them if I am not there.

All the places she could go broody, and she chooses the counter in my workshop. I had to put the cage bottom filled with hay there because she had just laid her eggs right on the darn counter.

Her eggs are developing, though, so at least there's that. And I know she's safe from predators, haha.

She looks quite content in that spot lol. Her saddle looks great on her too!

I was wondering if you'd recognize the saddle. A fox tried to nab her but only got feathers before the emus showed it that it was making a mistake. She got the saddle to cover her bare spots until the feathers come back.

It's one of my newer fabrics so I definitely recognize it :) I'm glad the emus were there to protect her!

I love all the pics of turkeys! My 10 week old died two days ago, but i have two adults, Tom and the famous Chip, who I wrote a book about (it is on amazon as A True Story Chip if anyone is interested) and two four week olds, One is named Ada, she somehow cured her own splay leg! The other we arn't sure if male or female, so if girl, we are naming her Crisp, and if it is a boy, his name's Jack.

😂 I got rid of 4 spare toms and jakes at a farm swap today. Now the only male who free ranges the yard is my “yard dog” Spaghetti.
Speaking of, I need to share. This morning while I and family members were snatching the other males, Spaghetti was very… alert.

I at one point watched him shimmy-run away from everyone while I was carting 2 of the males and my stepfather was going to grab the last. Then, as my stepfather carried the aforementioned last male towards the trailer, Spaghetti broke into a full sprint after him, overtaking my mother in speed. He gave up pretty quickly once we left the turkey area though, and ran off to try and assert dominance over one of the caged breeding toms because he had nobody else to harass.

I love having him in my yard. He’s wildly entertaining.
