People, government is involved in every level of life now, some good some bad. Government is responsible for:

Roads
schools
parks (local, state, national)
migratory birds
patrolling territorial fishing waters
managing fishing and hunting
IRS
immigration
food safety (inclucing the labeling that let's us dieters know what is in our food)
product safety (lead in products from China)
range leasing (BLM)
clean water
mineral rights management
the military
drug regulation
law enforcement
laws themselves
the post office
medicare/medicade
VA
border patrol
driver liscensing
research funding
NASA
UT, A&M, UCLA, The Air Force Academy, West Point, etc
Census Bureau
sex offender registries
police
fire fighters

The list is nearly endless. I don't agree with everything my taxes are spent on, and I don't think every government agency/effort is well run; however, just because the government is involved doesn't mean that something is poorly run or ineffcient. Most of us like clean air and water, safe and reliable medicines, roads, schools, and parks. People who say they don't want the government in their lives aren't paying attention. JMHO

Very nearly all of those things could be privately run. Profit motive = effeciency. I think we could all do without the IRS.

The (few) private highways in this country are extremely safe, well managed, and profitable. Public schools? Don't get me started. As for food/product safety, the feds just do a flat out bad job. Air and water were clearing up well before the EPA and Clean Air/Water acts. Profit motive = good.

Nows not the time for Democrats to back down on health care reform.

We can't be afraid of the heat out there, nor the polls that say the country is divided. Fox News, Rush, Hannity, and Beck were all around the past six years, and we rolled to our big wins right over their heated, and at times hateful opposition. Don't forget the lessons of the past two national elections. People want change, and they want us to give it to them. Thats why you were elected.

Democrats need to keep their eyes on the big prize. Single payer is the best plan, but it can't pass this congress. The public option is the best competitive alternative to private insurance, but I can't predict the final bill will include a public option. The House Democrats will pass a bill with a public option, the Senate Democrats will pass their bill with non-government run co-op's, and the real fight will begin at the end of September to merge the Senate and House bills into one final bill. I do believe that, in the end, House Democrats will be brought onboard without a public option if the alternative is passing no plan at all. I also believe 50 Senate Democrats CAN be sold on the public option.
The White House can't, and won't dictate the final bill--that's up to congressional Democrats. They will find away to get this done.

Nobody ever said this would be easy. Nobody is going to get everything they want out of a final bill. That was understood by all going into this debate, including the President.
The goal is to get a better health care system--one free of needless waste and abuse, one that offers coverge to all Americans, and one that is deficit-neutral.

It's time to answer the call, roll up our sleeves, and find the right path to a much-overdue reform of our health care system.

Whether you are "for it" or "against it"....."We the People" are the government. Our elected officials are exactly that, elected to do the PEOPLES work, not to set an independent agenda for the purpose of re-election.

So....if you're for it, tell your Congressmen/women, your Senators. If your against it, like I am, do the same. I already have. At least, when all is said and done, whatever the outcome, I didn't sit idly by and just let "whatever was gonna happen, just happen".

Speak up and be heard! It's your priviledge, your right AND your responsibility, not only to yourself, but to future generations.

The single best thing that could happen to reduce health care cost is the elimination of frivalous law suits and ins. fraud [guess thats 2] Out side of that any free health care or entitlement program is just robbing peter to pay paul or robin hooding it.

You're right. The past two elections the people have spoken. We have elected a Democratic President, House, and Senate.

BTW the President we elected ran on health care reform.
