hi!! So I’ve read the article on assisted hatching.....many times for a few clutches. Finally ran into an issue! My chick is on day 2+ of zero progress....everyone that pipped before it has hatched out & is doing well......time to help it....come to find it’s still hadn’t finishing absorbing its yolk. Following the protocol......I’m still waiting & upped humidity.....how long should it take? It has no desire to be active & hatch on its own. But it seems ok & is chirping, breathing, swallowing, for now. Plz advise! TIA!

Hi! I'm not sure which article on assisted hatching you read, but for future reference, here's this one:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/guide-to-assisted-hatching-for-all-poultry.72886/

Do you still have the bottom of its shell? This chick should be tucked back into the bottom of its shell, and then it and the shell should be placed propped upright in a cup until it finished absorbing. There's a section on that in the article I just linked.

Also, remove the chick from the wet paper towel. You never want to directly place a chick or egg on a wet paper towel because it chills them.

Thank you! I’ll remove the towel, it is in the incubator at 99 degrees so I didn’t think it was, but I’ll still remove it.

It does still have part of the bottom of the shell. I’ll keep it there.

Yes that’s the article I read & saw her talking about it, I just didn’t know if anyone had an estimated time it takes.....or if it’s just UNTIL. Thank you Pyxis!

It just takes 'until it's done' basically - could be more or less time depending on how much is still left to absorb :) I wrote that article, lol.

And you're welcome! How's she looking now, yolk look like it's going down?

Oh!!! Well thank you so much for the article!! It’s so helpful!! Well I’m worried that the paper towel started absorbing it When i took it away, I put it in a little cup & started becoming super active & kicking. I just looked again & it looks like tiny maggots are on the yolk! There was a couple of flies earlier! What do I do???

Can you post a picture? If there really are maggots, that's a problem that will need to be dealt with ASAP.

There’s a small clump of them on the membrane, not the chick or yolk.....I’m afraid to separate the membrane

Those do appear to be fly eggs. You should be able to carefully cut that piece off, doesn't look like there's any veining or anything left there that would get hurt doing so.

Ok done! No bleeding & no maggots on it. Yolk does look smaller too!
