Advice for breeding BBS (Blue Black Splash) genetics! 🐣

I wonder though, can blues can get too dark? I haven't taken pictures yet, but a couple of my pullets are almost charcoal-colored.

There's what the standard says (I don't know that), and there's your own preference too. If you like a particular shade, and the standard does not say otherwise, then you might as well aim for the shade you like.

If my experience with silkied Blues is any indication, they can definitely get too dark, though I don't honestly know how much of that is an effect of the silkied feathering and how much is the base color behind it being overly dark.

As far as what's preferred in the standard, I don't know. Most of the birds I see in show are a slate gray color, never overly pale, but certainly not blackish either. A few examples of Blue birds I've seen in show (none of these are my birds, but I did take these pictures of them).

WOW!!! That second photo is GORGEOUS!!! What breed is that?

What utterly gorgeous birds!!!!!

Truly, some of the birds you see in show are awe inspiring. :love If you have any in a reasonable driving distance from you that are APA or ABA sanctioned, they're a lot of fun to go to just to admire all the different breeds and varieties that are entered!

The second picture is a Blue Sumatra. Them and the Blue Andalusians I've seen in show are really spectacular with their lacing! šŸ˜ And in the other pictures are a Blue OEGB and a Silver Blue Cochin bantam.

I was going to say! She looks like my BA’s but the dark legs and dark head/comb were throwing me off. So pretty!!!

If they’re getting THAT dark, chances are they are blacks.

This is the one who I can't quite tell if she's blue so dark as to be charcoal or black:

You can see a difference between her head and her body and apparent lacing on the her feathers.

Not like this glossy shine on her hatchmate:
