Hello im new to the forum and live in wasilla alaska. I just placed 4 flying mallard eggs, 12 ringneck pheasants and 2 chukar eggs in my bator at about 10 last night. so far the temps holding off between 99.1 and 99.9, humidity is at 60%. Hoping for the best

. this is my homemade incubator made from an old cabinet, forced air with two pull out drawers, one for eggs and one that stays 3 degrees lower for new babies

. Hopefully ill get babies this time! my old incubator fried my eggs, skyrocketed to 113 degrees overnight (glitchy stupid thing is in the trash now!).
Anyways, i had a question.. When can i do my first candling to see if theres babies growing or not? Also, one of my chukar eggs had a crack in it so i repaired it, what are the chances of it hatching? hes in the bator now, givin it the benifit of the doubt.
Good luck to you all on your babies!!

the one with the crack has a good chance if you caught it before it started to leak.
As for candling, it depends on the light source you use, if it is bright enough you can see veins and the beginning development as early as 3-4 days, I never toss anything based on this date though...I mark them if I think they are doubtful and recandle at 10 and 14 days to double check. I also candle a last time on Day 18.

AkTomboy,

We had a chick just like that a few weeks ago, it ended up being put down. We made the little "chair" for it etc but it wasnt getting
any better. It got to the point of doing nothing but crying all the time. We were told it was a problem with it's hips. Sometimes
they get that problem when positioned in the egg an odd way. It is literally a deformity......

Never had an issue. Chicks do just fine as well. Now, if its a bit of straw on a slippery surface, I can see that being an issue for sure.

Sounds good, I'm revamping the old chicken house for my meat birds and will be making a new tractor coop for my layers to free range. The hay will be going down on a wood floor, so shouldn't be too slippery at all. Thanks

I use saw dust I get free from a local sawmill. If you have one nearby, they will probably give it to you. My experience is the hay/straw will make one large mass later when you go to clean it out. Makes nice mulch, tho.

They won't be on the hay long enough to make a mass of it

They're only around for about 2 more weeks... they're my meat babies...lol

I will have to check into a sawmill tho!

Hi T! I'm sorry about the chukar egg... I must have missed it! But if you waxed it, it should be fine. I've hatched waxed eggs before.
Wait until about 10 days to candle the first time for the pheasants and chukars. With the duck eggs, you will start seeing something around day 5. They're VERY easy to candle.

I will definitely try to figure out how to get pics here... haha! hmmm, another challenge... So i emailed a guy on craigslist about some melanistic pheasants he had posted.. well the eggs that is. I got 6 from him and also he just decided he had too many eggs so he decided to just give me 10 bobwhite quails and 6 or 7 chukar eggs.. I have found out just today that my incubator isnt even maxed out at 39 eggs! THATS A LOT OF EGGS! my thermometer was a little off so i had to change it, really what are the odds of a reading being constant at 99.6 degrees? i put the new thermometer in and it actually moves a tenth of a degree here and there so im trusting it a little better. Everybody is sittin pretty so far and im eagerly awaiting day 10 to candle. I cant believe i have to wait that long! :

Aah well, i can wait, i can be patient... (you think if i tell myself that enough itll be true!?) HA. ok i need help here, anybody know how the heck i can post pics here? Thanks lotts! And thank you T! Love the eggs, Hoping for the best with my hatchings! Good luck to everybody!
