This video shows how the plucker works.

We use 5 gallon buckets of salt water, changed out daily, to soak the birds. We have 19 of our own birds, but people that bought birds from us bring them back and we process them all on the same day. It's not worth it to set up the plucket et. al. for just a couple of birds, but 90+...? Yeah, it's worth it. But everyone takes their own birds home.

Our birds are 8 weeks old right now, and they are beautiful little butterballs...

I feel like the witch in Hansel and Gretel... lovingly fattening them up... feels weird.

ETA: We usually remove the head before we pluck, and with the turkeys it helps to remove the feet as well... keeps them from getting caught and broken.

We have a relative that works for Chugiak Electric Co. and he's bringing one home for us this weekend. Why the electric co. has plastic barrels, I don't know.
There used to be a guy in Wasilla for years that sold barrels in all different sizes, metal and plastic, but he's not there this year.

I've read that if birds are soaked for too long, they get a "slime" type layer under the skin from absorbing the water. Have you seen anything like that in yours?

It's completely inexcusable the way that package was handled, plus taking at least two extra days, even though we sent it Priority. I've never had more than one egg cracked in any package I've sent over the last three years that I recall. I think this is the last time I send out hatching eggs. Just disgusting!

OMG I think I'm outta control... I just ordered the following birds.....

3 Norweigan Jaerhon, Male
2 Norweigan Jaerhon, Pullet

Pandora and spekledhen, I don't know if you have seen me mention the idea of having them shipped to Fbks or not. Ive mentioned it twice now with no reply. It saves you a lot of headache and time to just drive to the main
hub and pick them up, It goes straight from Anchorage to Fairbanks, without anyone else handling your eggs or chicks. Just yesterday I received some chicks OVERNIGHT, they sent them priority mail from Mt Healthy. We just got our meat birds in today, they were two days from Whelp. Last year it took 3 days when
I ordered them and had them sent to Houston. My eggs have all come within two days, once again, priority mail having them sent right to Wasilla instead of being trucked out to us in Houston......
